In Detail

This mitre gauge system is made from 5mm steel plate and features positive stops at 0°, 22.5°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 67.5° and 90°. Simple to adjust with a spring loaded plunger stop and able to be set at any other angle between 0-90° as required. The other main feature is a 458mm long anodised alloy fence, fitted with an adjustable flip-over length stop. This fence can be slid along the gauge body by releasing two thumb screws. The 458mm bar can be fitted to a standard 3/4" x 3/8" (19 x 9.5mm) table slot, the locking washer can be removed if required. This mitre gauge will improve accuracy when cross or mitre cutting on many machines or router tables.

Very good upgrade for woodworking machines.

I have had one of these some near 12 months. Not normally a reviewer, but the previous tome by Mr hender deserves a response. Firstly, 0.1 degree? In wood? Really? Oh well, obviously he is using engineered timbers without the propensity to "move" due to humidity changes. In my view, a retailer who recognises that the standard supplied mitre fences which are the usual fare on machines can be improved on, without the expense of the Excalibur or Incra offerings. deserves support.
Yes, improvements can be made, and I'm sure Axminster will take a look and enhance this pivot. But, £80 is not a lot for what this is. I paid twice this for a well know Japanese AAA standard engineers square and it's no where as well made as the UJK fence. So, like almost all the other reviewer's, trust me when I say this is a great mitre fence, better than anything else under £100.

Fundamental flaw in pivot makes nonsense of the accuracy claim

I bought one of these at Axminster in High Wycombe, hoping that it would meet at least the core claim of being accurately made and of reasonable precision. It is made of reasonable gauge material, and is generally well finished. However, as usual with marketing-driven firms they put more effort into choosing the colour of the anodizing than actually designing and testing the essential components - the pivot and the detents that set the "precision" angles. The detents (as noted by another reviewer) don't work all that well - but the absolute howler is the sloppy main pivot! How any "engineer" could propose this as a precision device without even taking care to provide an accurate pivot, I really don't know. The bare thread of the ordinary bolt runs in a loose plastic bush and it is easy to see the resulting slop in the relative position of the fence vs the rail. This is a very poor design, and as the other critical reviewer noted, means that the fence has to be checked for square (or any other angle) every time it is used. Shame on UJK Technology for this feeble effort, and on Axminster for approving and selling something that clearly is not what the marketing claims it to be.
I made a tight-fitting bush and a suitable pivot bolt with a smooth shank, and the slop was gone - why a manufacturer could not do this I really don't know - it can't cost as much as the pretty-pretty anodizing. The detent positions are still rather poor, so it's still not good enough for "precision" work but it serves well enough in general.
This product is another case where a Vernier scale would make SO much sense, and cost almost nothing to add - this is something that should be a default for almost any measuring tool as it gives such a big advantage for negligible cost - and is ideal for a "precision" tool because it would enable setting to fractions of a degree - which is often needed. I've had to set up compound mitres in the past where 0.1 degree was not accurate enough. Come on UJK, there are market opportunities for you if you will just try a bit harder - and at £80+ retail, there is masses of margin on something like this.

I do wish that UK manufacturers would just do a proper job on the basics - not built like professional gear with cast iron for everything, of course, but just simple, well-designed components. This product is so utterly simple that the whole design process should not take a single engineer more than a few days from start to finish (I work in a product development company full of engineers...) I'd love to hear from the UJK development team about how the next version is going to make them look much better! No-one wants to have to criticise or to see UK firms suffer poor reviews - but for goodness sake take more care! Your reputation depends on getting these basics right - no amount of coloured anodizing will do it for you.

Solid, but flawed

On first inspection this is a nice piece of kit. However, I quickly found that the design to be flawed, making it fairly inaccurate and frustrating to use. The angle stops are locked into position by a bolt centering in holes drilled into the base plate. The trouble is that there's invariably a fair amount of play, meaning it doesn't stop down at exactly the right angle. Of course you can tighten the handle down to fully secure it, but you also need to get your try square out every time you do this.

Other mitre fences use a slot and pin method, which locks the fence in place more firmly and accurately. I would have chosen a different product had I known this at first....

Fantastic bit of kit

Bought the large one of these about 6-8 months ago for use in my table saw (12 inch trade saw) and was so impressed with it that when I got my UJK professional router table I decided to get the mini version for use on it as the fence and bar are both smaller, at full price I'd say these are good value but I managed to get both at just over half price, hence the 5 stars as at that price they are amazing bits of kit. Accuracy is great with the adjustments on the bottom bars to make the precise fit easy.
All in all very very happy with both another Axminster gages there UJK brand never fails to impress me. Will definitely buy more UJK kit in the future, may even upgrade my axcalaber dovetail jig to the UJK version as its got those wonderful little extras the UJK brand is so good for.

Beautifully engineered

I wasn't too sure about spending this much on a mitre gauge for my router table, but I'm glad I did. It's a beautifully well thought out and engineered device that feels like it'll last a lifetime. The click stops are very positive and the adjustable rollers embedded in the bar mean it's a very secure fit in the t-track. The extruded fence is very well finished, as is the clever stop. My routing should be safer and more accurate from now on, which can only be good.
