Description

In Detail

Exceptionally high clamping forces can be obtained with this hold down. The arm is free to pivot independently, all levered forces are exerted downward, without any loss due to horizontal slippage from the canting action of the hold down post. The fine grooves on the post resist upward forces, yet still allow easy entry into a 19mm diameter hole. The 250mm hold down post gives you 200mm of clamping capacity, matching the 200mm throat capacity. Used vertically on the top of a bench, or horizontally in a side skirt. Sold individually

Veritas bench hold down clamp.

Very expensive, but with veritas, you get what you pay for. You could buy cheaper, but these are built to last a lifetime and they will too. Easy to use, they do the job very well and you need to use a soft pine block under the clamp to protect your work, because it sure does apply some pressure. Make sure you screw a piece of hardwood or thick ply under your bench too if it's less than an inch thick and drill down through that to take the clamp shaft. The clamp shaft is also serrated so there is no slippage. Worth remortgaging the old house for.....sigh....

A top-quality update of the ancient bench holdfast.

This type of tool needs a good thick bench top with lots of clearance underneath - that ought to go without saying. That aside, with a leather pad glued to the pressure plate, this will hold any workpiece firm without marking. An excellent piece of kit.

Expensive but very good

I think these hold-downs are very expensive in the UK. However, they are solidly constructed and very versatile. They can exert an enormous controlled holding pressure effortlessly. A slight drawback arises from this force, namely, if your worktop or bench top is not fairly sturdy with a good thick top (say 40 mm to 50 mm, perhaps slightly less with hardwood) then the post may distort its fixing hole. You will also need clearance for the post under any worktop or surface you are proposing to use these hold-downs in conjunction with. However, if your worktop or bench can accommodate their design then they provide a real convenience..

Veritas Hold Down Clamp

Such a useful clamp. It has made so many jobs in the workshop so much easier - and made the impossible possible. I wouldn't be without it now and just wish I had bought one when I first started out
