In Detail

The Veritas dovetail guide, which clamp in position, hold the saw at the correct place and angle for a perfect cut. Rare earth magnets embedded in the anodised aluminum guide and covered with a layer of low friction UHMW plastic keep the saw perfectly aligned as you cut. The clamping capacity of the guides covers material from 6 to 25mm(1/4" to 1") thick. It comes in the traditional ratio of 1:8. The guide can be used with any backless saw that has approximately 0.005" of tooth set, but work best with the Veritas dovetail saw that has been designed specifically for them.

The first 4 sets of thru' DTs (4 pins apiece) were a good snug fit straight from the vice.

I bought the saw and guide set. sceptical at first especially when I saw how whippy the saw was. I did expect a more aggressive cut but it did the job in 10mm sapele without labouring. The DT guide construction inspires confidence and the brass clamping screw/ thread are accurately machined brass, work effectively and give it a touch of class. In operation the saw slid easily against the PE insert, and the powerful magnet housed inside the tool held the saw faithfully. Plumb cuts remained plumb and angled cuts consistent. Success still relies on accurate setting out and marking and to a large extent eye judgement in placing the guide not only correctly relative to the knife line but consistently when cutting multiple DTs. The only disappointment is the probable durability if the PE insert which was soon beginning to show raggedness from catching the saw teeth when commencing the cut, right where you need a good positive edge to eyeball the guide against the line. On The whole a good piece of kit.
