Description

In Detail

This honing guide overcomes the problem of accurately sharpening narrow blades. This unique guide consists of the narrow-blade clamping head, the standard roller base and the angle registration jig. The guide clamps blades from 3mm(1/8") to 38mm(1.1/2") wide. The specially designed parallel jaws ensure your blades stay square to the jig. The jig takes blades with bevelled or square edges. The canted jaws always keep them centred and tight to the reference face of the jig. It accepts bevel edge chisels up to 12mm(15/32") thick and square edged chisels up to 9mm(11/32") thick. The guide hones bevel angles from 15° to 40° and back bevels from 10° to 20°.

So far so good

Used on No 4 plane, block plane and half inch Japanese chisel.

1. The setup is good and repeatable. Tick
2. It holds the iron/chisel firmly. Tick (take care to tighten both sides equally)
3. It is comfortable to hold in use.
4. It appears well made.

In combination with a DMT 'stone' took < 15 minutes to put a new edge on.
Quite even, good angle, quick.

I might gripe in that I can see the roller needing attention and it's not removable
without hassle (grub screw, circlip), but that won't be for a good while.

The 'manual' / user guide is a bit Chinese quality, but it is available on line, PDF.

the 'tilt' mechanism (secondary bevel) is a great idea - no mention of 3/9 o'clock
which is puzzling. (see guide, or search youtube)

A case of get what you pay for? More than likely. After single use, it was a pleasure
to use my plane again, taking whisps off without any weight on the plane.

I think I'll be sharpening more often, without groaning first.

Well done Veritas. A good product.
