Description

In Detail

This rebating plane cuts quickly and quietly, avoiding the set-up, noise and dust associated with power tools. It is configured with a blade skewed at a 30° angle to reduce cut resistance, aid in shaving clearance and help pull the fence tight against the workpiece. Because the blade sits flush with the side of the plane body, corner cuts are clean and accurate. It is adjustable in two axes (vertical and horizontal) for depth and projection, the scoring spur sits ahead of the blade and is used to reduce tear out on cross grain work. The spur can be recessed for work with the grain.

The large wooden handles are solid and comfortable to hold. The 248mm(9.3/4") long ductile cast iron body is machined with a 45° blade bed and weighs 1.5kg. Supplied with a lapped A2 tool steel blade that is 3.2mm thick and just over 41mm(1.5/8") wide. The lapped blades have a flatness tolerance of ±0.005mm or better over the working surface, and with an average roughness surface finish of 0.000127mm(5 microinches) or better. The plane is available in left and right-hand versions. Made in Canada.

Great product - instructions -so so.

Like all Veritas stuff, this plane is great to use. However, I found in the description, the left hand /right-hand thing confusing. If you are right handed, you want the front knob on the left and if you are left handed, you want it to the right. Basically, if you are right-handed, buy the right-hand model. Also, like most instruction manuals, I found parts of this one hard to follow. Here is a sample: To adjust the scoring blade relative to the side of the plane, loosen the fence locking knobs and remove the fence. Unscrew and remove the front fence rod. Loosen the scoring axle locking screw. Insert a small-slot screwdriver through the front fence rod hole to access a slotted set screw that establishes the position of the scoring blade relative to the side of the plane. While pressing the scoring blade and axle in against the set screw, turn the set screw clockwise or counterclockwise, as required until the scoring blade is positioned just proud of the side of the plane. Once the position of the scoring blade is established, retighten the locking screw and reverse the steps to replace the fence rod and fence. They could have made it clearer by using less text and more pictures.

Another excellent Veritas plane

Does everything a rebate should do BUT it works like no rebate plane I have used before.
A quick sharpen as demonstrated by Deneb Puchalski last weekend and it was ready to go. Takes a few minutes to set up the blade accurately - just follow the enclosed instruction sheet. Setting the width and depth of the rebate is simplicity itself then it is a quick trial cut to check dimensional accuracy then it is off to go with planing rebates. It cuts fast and accurately. The spiral shavings that are produced are a work of art in themselves!
Just remember to keep you fingers on the comfortable wooden handles - the blade has very sharp pointy corners waiting to snag you if you are careless!

A Superb Rebate Plane.

This is a really well made rebate plane and is very easy to set up and use. The blade needed minimal work to get it cutting nicely.

It's very well built with no play in the fence, although I might make a larger fence for it with a piece of wood as it was a little tricky to get a true 90 shoulder in a deep full width rebate....That could be due to my technique though.

Well made, well designed and all round smashing.

A high quality precision plane.

This skew rebate plane works very well and is built to a high standard, which is what can be expected from Veritas.

Out of the box and a whisk over the stone for a minimum of lapping and I was cutting perfect full width rebates in oak within 5 minutes. I've never used a skew rebate plane before, so I was particularly impressed with how easy it is to set up, use and achieve perfect results straight away.
