In Detail

The problem that most customers encounter when using a router inverted in a table set-up is that, even when fully plunged, the router collet is still some way below the surface of the table limiting the depth of cut. We decided that we would produce a very accurate and precise collet extension that would overcome this problem by using standard ER20 engineering collets. These precision collets have the unique ability to grip over a diameter range of 1mm without any loss of accuracy. The Axcaliber extension is supplied with a collet suitable for 1/2" shank cutters with collets available for 8mm, 1/4"(6.35mm) and 1/8"(3.2mm) shank sizes. A much improved grip all round the cutter shank is provided giving safer routing with less vibration, and the collet nut incorporates an ejection ring to release the shank for easy cutter changes. Dimensions are 75mm overall with body length of 40mm. N.B. Collet nut requires a 27mm spanner.

Please note, it is best practice for use to always start your router on the slowest speed, test the cutter set up on a piece of scrap timber, increasing the speed gradually to get the best cut. Always take note of any vibration that becomes apparent, reduce your router's speed if there is any vibration. Make sure that the collet extension is inserted at least two thirds of the way in and the cutter is inserted up to the K line.

Ideal for my purpose

I'm full of praise for this item. The decision to make this compatible with the ER (20) system of collet's is perfect as this makes the scope of use

enormous and all my er20 collets fit this. I would have had to spend hundreds of pounds on collets and extenders just for one make of router , this fits all 1/2 inch routers

So I can't imagine anything which could offer better value for money!

Axminster 1/2 inch collet extention

What a great quality collet extension, and at a very reasonable price.
I bought this to fit my trend router because the collet would not protrude above my table,
I have a very old but good trend table.
A similar product from Trend would have cost around twice the price, and would have not done any different job.
Well done Axminster for producing a first class piece of kit.
Again looking after your customers in a first class way.

Good - but......

The machining and overall quality of this item is good and well made apart from the flats that have been poorly machined and fit neither a 20mm nor 21mm spanner properly .
My real niggle, however, is that you will need to have a 27mm spanner to hand to tighten and loosen it. My largest is 24mm apart from a massive adjustable that I have.
For the price, which I think is on the high side, I think they should include a cheapish 27mm spanner that you can keep by your router instead of having to go and get the adjustable from the hook every time.

good buy.

Very nicely made part.
I use with a Trend T11 in a Trend table, and as well as the range in height it gives you,
I feel that it will help to stop straining and weakening of the router plunge springs in the long term,
As you are not compressing the springs as much for long periods of time if your router spends most of its life
under your table.
you will need an adjustable spanner for the new collet size, or treat yourself to a 27mm spanner -
so as not to damage the collet nut in the long term.

Precision Engineered

I have one of these in a Trend T11 router in a table. I also have 8mm and 1/4" collets making it even more useful. Much easier changing bit shank size than changing the actual router collets. If you have any problems with router bits being too short this is what you want. Do not run bits with too much shank protruding from the collet, buy an extension.
