What am I doing wrong ?

So guys, I bought this spiral head with bearings as I thought it was the answer to template shaping tall items like boxes. I tried it on a test piece ( an all concave box ) but got quiet a few white knuckle dig ins.The box was grabbed out of my hands. I was disappointed as I expected a silky smooth cut. It was a finger jointed box but I wouldn't have expected the end grain fingers to put up much resistance. The spindle speed was medium -12,000 .Its quite hard to find info on this tool online, hence my post here. - any comments ?
