In Detail

This is a general purpose carving vice which offers a combination of ruggedness, versatility, ease of use and low cost. The body and base are made from cast iron and the mounting plate and other components are steel. Particular attention has been paid to the rigidity of the mounting plate and its stem which can be a source of flexing on less well made vices. The 125mm diameter mounting plate has 16 holes for the mounting screws, arranged in 3 concentric circles. The combination of heavy duty steel clamping handle, knurling on the shaft and serrations on the clamping faces ensures that nothing will move under onslaught from the mallet. The height excluding the mounting plate is 200mm. The vice is operated with the supplied Tommy bar.

Carvers Vice

Bought this vice after watching the demonstration video with the intention to buying the chuck attachements at a later date. Today tried to buy attachements but apparently they are not available anymore. So why is the video still on the web page giving false information?

Could be better.

I am an amateur carver and I have had this vice for over two years. Initially it seemed to be very heavy and robust . However, over time I have found two problems. Although the vice can be rotated through 360 degrees the rods provided to adjust the rotation soon became bent at the ends and I have had to use a round ended screwdriver as an adjuster: a C spanner would do the job better. The other problem is the faceplate.Where the plate joins the metal rod this has now become loose and perhaps needs to be welded to secure it safely because now it is wobbly and insecure and does not give me confidence. I have considered buying a replacement but the problem will recur.

A very heavy solid piece of equipment.

This woodcarver's vice with its multi-holed faceplate is a very secure piece of equipment available at a very reasonable price. It has the facility to hold the workpiece at different angles and it can be rotated through 360 degrees by using a metal rod; my model does not have a c-spanner which I think would be preferable. The rod is not robust enough and is now bent at the tip so I just use an adapted screwdriver. As a result I have given it only four stars for quality.
All in all I would recommend it .

Overall good but the dogs could be a bit coarser

Overall this is a good bit of kit. I am a proffesional carver and have had some hefty chunks of wood on it and it's taken it well.
My one reservation is the dogs that hold the tilting angle - to my mind they could do with being just a bit coarser. You have to be careful to get them aligned properly or they can slip, consequently I'm on my second one, having worn the dogs out on my first one - took a couple of years though!

Very fit for purpose

Unlike the Veritas carving vice this one does not budge when it is locked off. Unlike the Verutas there are no rubber O rings that need replacing and it has the added advantage of being able to rotate the whole thing 360 degrees on its stand, with the optional extra ''C' spanner making it very easy lock when the vice is in the desired position. In hindsight, I wish I had bought the Axminster vice rather than the much more expensive Veritas one when I started carving several years ago. It may not be as elegant and light, but it really does hold the piece you are working on very securely.
