In Detail

The Axminster Deluxe Pen Assembly Press makes the assembly of your pens and project kits fast and simple. A nylon pad, adjustable for position, protects any plated parts of the pen body whilst the toggle clamp applies an even pressure to press the other end of the pen into position. The fast action thread adjustment allows you to quickly adjust the capacity to accommodate different sizes of pen kit. The unit can be bench or wall mounted and the robust metal construction should give years of trouble free service. An excellent investment for the keen penmaker. Base 370mm x 110mm, capacity 0 - 142mm, piston travel 32mm.

Like many others who make pens I had assemble them using my vice that was always a bit risky, but my son gave me an Axminster gift card for Christmas so I decided to invest in some better equipment for my pen making hobby, i.e. a pen assembly press. Today was the first day I used it and was more that a little disappointed to find that the press had damaged the pen tip on a fairly expensive pen I was making as a gift for a friend. The damage occurred when I used the central hole in the nylon bush as a locator for the pen tip and applied pressure to attach the tip, when I removed the pen from the press the nylon had left crushing marks on the finished tip. I now have to find a way of preventing this happening again. I have no problems with the build quality of the press but I dont see any reason why this countersunk hole is where it is. It is misleading by making the user think it is a centering point to align the pen kit in the press. Not Happy.

Is this device necessary? Absolutely not. Is it good at what it does? Absolutely yes! So far, I've used my bench vice to press pen kit parts into the tubes, with all the fear and trepidation that the force of a badly judged turn too far could wreck an expensive and well loved project. This press is beautifully made and the convenience and simplicity of operation makes it easily worth the somewhat eye-watering price-tag.
