In Detail

Engineer Classification & 3 Year Guarantee

This advanced mill/drill has a 3-axis digital read-out (DRO) of the table position (X & Y), plus the head stock height (Z). All the other attributes of the standard SX4 are here including being made almost entirely of cast iron with a dovetail column for huge strength and rigidity, and fitted with a high torque 1,500W brushless DC motor with electronic variable speed. The spindle has an R8 taper and a speed range of 100-1,600rpm. There are also digital displays for spindle speed and spindle height. The headstock is fitted with power elevation, quietly raising and lowering the headstock. It can tilt 45° right and 45° left. A neat touch is the digital headstock angle indicator, providing accurate headstock angle setting. A fine downfeed control for milling and a course feed for drilling are fitted. There are switch controls on the handles for thread tapping. All motor controls are grouped on the headstock for ease of use. The table is massively constructed, with a ground surface and a coolant trough with a drain outlet. An optional X axis power feed which brings a higher standard of finish and a sturdy, well made floor stand are available. For those who need repeat accuracy for small batches, or who appreciate the extra ease of use a DRO brings, this machine is a great choice.

Good machine, very accurate

I've had this machine for a couple of years now, so I've used it quite a bit, mainly for machining acetal and aluminium. The main problem here is that the top speed (1600) is a bit low for my requirements, but it turned out to be easy to upgrade the speed to 3200 using a different gear and belt. The motor, being brushless and belt driven is really quiet.

The powered z-axis is a real plus - winding the head up and down manually would have been hard work - this is a large beast (the biggest that I could get into my workshop). However, you can only use the z-axis motor for rough positioning. I've never used the tilting option so the digital protractor is a waste. However, the machine came perfectly trammed and has stayed that way.

I haven't bothered with a powered x-y feeds as I'm planning to convert it to a CNC mill and I'll add my own drives.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with this mill.

Very pleasant milling machine

I have received my SX4 at the end of 2017 August.
After 7 moth, my review is very near from Christopher's one.
I'm very satisfied of the features and the capabilities of this machine.
I have machined hard steel with a 50 mm 4 teeth carbide head, and the power of the motor is amazing.
It has been a little bit tricky to put the machine on the stand, in my workshop, with a garage crane.
I had to unmount the Z motor, because the workshop's roof was not high enough for the high of crane arm + machine + stand.
It took me almost half a day ;-) to do that securely, including time to go to buy straps and hooks ...

My evaluation is also the same for the Sieg power feed, bought separately.
It works ... but it is not very pleasant to use, with a clutch lacking of precision.

Truly excellent machine

Again I've waited for a few month to leave my review, this machine is truly excellent. very well built and very precise. very quiet operation and great workspace dimension. the motor is top spec. I've had it running and low mid and high speeds and labouring under load and the rpm never fluctuates more than 10-15rpm under load.

The power feed, available separately is truly shocking but it is the only one available to my knowledge, but the machine its self i can't say anything negative about. very happy with the product
