In Detail

Axminster Evolution Series probes have 12.7mm (1/2") diameter shanks, designed to fit into the Axminster Evolution Series woodturning handle. Axminster Evolution Series probes are particularly well suited to hollowing boxes, small hollow forms and goblets and useful when turning small bowls or platters.

The straight probe has a 300mm long shank with the last 75mm tapering to the cutting tip. The tapered end allows you greater access. The tip is a fine grade, solid tungsten carbide, cup shaped, circular cutter, 8mm in diameter. The tungsten carbide cutter is sharp and ready to use, and will retain its sharp edge far longer than any HSS tool. The great advantage comes when the cutter eventually begins to lose its edge. Then you simply slacken the retaining screw and rotate the cutter slightly to give you a new sharp edge. With a full 360° available, these cutters have a greatly extended working life. Replacements are readily available. The cutters can take a clean shaving and leave a very smooth surface straight from the edge.

Each probe includes a torx wrench for the fixing screw.

Useful tool in the ever increasing arsenal

To balance another review here I would say I have had the two different shaped Evolution probes now for 12 months and have found them both very useful and of good quality. They are quite slim at the business end which allows you to do small hole hollowing with greater ease than some other similar tools. As with all carbide tools you do need to get familiar with how they cut (particularly those like this tool which have cup shaped cutters). Despite their small size they can remove wood at a huge rate of knots and this can lead the unwary into getting a catch.
Downsides for me are the very small Torx screw head and the delicate nature of the carbide cup cutter. The cheap torx wrench provided is really not up to the task and I quickly had to get a decent quality wrench to allow me to remove and rotate the cutter. And the cutters themselves do seem more delicate and prone to losing their edge more quickly than other carbides I have. Mind you I have been using them on some beech which has gone like iron so maybe 'mea culpa'!

Unsafe, poor quality

I have a number of EasyWood tools cutters, and Crown gouges, I also have a small lathe with minimal torque.

This is the first tool I have had that has broke in use. At less that 1200 rpm the cutting head mount bend back on itself at an angle.

The tool was in use for less than 1/4 hour before this happened. I would not recommend. In fact, I would go as far to say do not buy this product. Stick to EasyWood tools if you want a robust carbide cutter.
