Broken twice

I bought some of these a few years back, within a few months the dial was no longer accurate and I asked for a replacement. Axminister replaced, no questions asked, good on you axminister. The replacement set have lasted a few years and now the same problem, the dial skips and won't fall back to zero, so no longer accurate. As it's been a few years now administer will no longer replace them. These worked for a while but I don't expect to be buying new calipers every couple of years. Buy cheap, buy twice.

Brilliant bit of kit !

Got home today from the Mark Sanger demo at Warrington ninety quid lighter! Result for Axy. Amongst my new toys was this dial calliper, and I have to say I am very impressed. I have checked out its accuracy by measuring some new and unused engineering drill bits, and it passed with flying colours. I have used a digital calliper for many years, only a cheap Aldi job and which I have sometimes questioned its accuracy. My main interest is in checking thickness of prepared stock from my thicknesser or hand prepared stock, which I use on my build up of segmented turnings. Feature ring building requires a level of dimensional accuracy not normally required in woodturning, and this little jobbie look to be the thing to use.
In use, care needs to be taken when reading the units off the beam, as I found that it appeared to be reading 1 MM. high ! I was actually measuring a 7mm drill bit, and at first look it seemed to measure 7.99mm. I could see the 5mm major mark and 2 smaller marks after it........therefore I read 7. It was then that I realised that to record a mark on the beam you need to see the whole thickness of the line, and to do this you need to go past the mark and see the other side of the line, and then you can add the reading from the dial which was about .98mm. I hope that makes sense. What I was actually looking at was 6 whole sections on the beam and .98 on the dial, so 6.98mm.
Variances in very similar measurements can be easily observed on a dial meter, much easier than the mental arithmetic needed when taking multiple readings with a digital calliper. The calliper comes well packed in a plastic foam lined case. There was no instructional leaflet or calibration certificate inside the package, and I don't know of it should have had one. I am very happy with this purchase and no need to keep a supply of spare batteries!
