This is a robust morticer of substantial cast iron construction, suitable for use in any home workshop and with plenty of power to cut 19mm mortices in softwoods. The table travel is controlled by two hand wheels, one for longitudinal and one for the transverse movement; the movement being smooth and precise with dovetail slides fitted with jib strips for fine adjustment. The table has a wooden facing for through morticing as well as a length stop for repetition work. Also fitted with a very convenient quick acting vice and two cam-operated work clamps. There is a very clear and well positioned scale at the rear of the table which, combined with the two travel stops, makes for accurate and convenient cutting of long mortices. The down feed handle can be easily re-positioned on its shaft to give the most convenient working position. The weight of the headstock is counter balanced by a gas strut and the vertical movement is controlled by a pair of stops and an easy-to-read scale. The morticing chisel is located in a mounting bush, of 3/4" or 13/16" diameter depending on the size of the chisel, and the auger is driven by a 16mm capacity drill chuck. The morticer is mounted on a cabinet base which includes a cupboard with shelf space for storage.

Dire. Quality control ? What quality controlI see that the other two reviews were in 2014 and if I was reviewing this morticer that I had back then then I would have agreed with all the comments. It was excellent. Sadly this current version seems to have come from the same shoddy factory as its smaller brother and it's good to see it being discontinued. Yet again, holes have been drilled inaccurately, parts missing, cabinet door shoved inside the cabinet and the up/down movement of the motor/chisel sub-assembly is simply horrible and not in the least bit pleasurable to use. You have to fight it all the way up. And fight it all the way down. If you try and adjust the gibs to give a freer travel then the chisel is no longer vertical with respect to the table (and your timber). Truly dire.

Great product, Great service.Overall this is a fantastic little machine, Everything you could want from a morticer at the price, spent a whole day morticing for some gates, went through it like butter. There were a few bits missing on delivery but one e-mail to axminster and they resolved it straight away. Great product, great service, great company, thankyou.

ExcellentThis is one hell of a tool for the price. A real serious workhorse that absolutely eats anything thrown at it. I had used cheaper models before and this not only has the grunt to get through hardwoods with ease but also the precision with the sliding rails to get the chisel dead into the corner of the mortise. Really superb. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
