In Detail

Hobby Classification & 3 Year Guarantee

A chip and coarse dust extractor for extracting from saws, planers, spindle moulders, bandsaws and similar machines in a small workshop. It comes with a cloth filter bag on the top and a plastic waste collection sack bellow. Power comes from a 750W induction motor equipped with a no-volt-release switch and emergency stop button. A single 100mm inlet can be used to connect to machines with a similar sized extraction port. Using smaller diameter hoses will severely reduce the airflow. An unusual feature of this extractor is the floor sweeping attachment which fits to the base of the machine, allowing the extractor to be wheeled around the workshop, collecting waste as it goes. There is a fine filter bag available for use when collecting medium sized dust particles, or alternatively, an optional fine dust cartridge filter can be fitted. The machine is supplied with approximately 600mm length of inlet hose; additional lengths of 100mm hose are available separately. This machine uses waste sack size - 560 x 915mm (340068).

This extractor has drawbacks

I reviewed this extractor shortly after purchase in 2014. Having lived with it for several years now there are a couple of significant drawbacks to note. Firstly, as other reviewers have commented, this extractor blocks far too easily if you try to suck up anything larger than dust like hand plane shavings. The plastic connector to the motor has a cross shaped inner frame on which shavings get stuck. I have given up using it for cleaning the floor. The second drawback is a lack of power. I have mine connected to a bandsaw and there is always a lot of dust that doesn't get extracted. If buying a new extractor I would definitely go with one that has more power.

Great product, but assembly is not straightforward

Bought this from my local Axminster store who were very helpful as always, so can't fault the quality of customer service. Took it home and began assembly, which was quite fiddly as:

1) None of the parts were identifiable in the manual (which looks like it was written in the 40s with a mechanical typewriter and photocopied recursively)
2) There were more washers and bolts included that were needed
3) There was no description in each stage of instruction detailing which bolts went where, which meant that assembly did involve an element of trial and error, and downright guessing.

That said, that's the only bad side to this product. Once assembled, it looks great and is manouverable. I've yet to use it in anger, but I believe the other reviewers when they comment on the performance. I just wanted to put this review up just to highlight the niggles with assembly, which I'm sure Axminster can easily rectify.

Outstanding value

I researched a lot of extractors before buying this for my rather heavy-duty hobby workshop (I have a 93-year-old, 32ft wooden yacht, so some of the pieces I need for that are industrial scale!). I've had it over a year now and have been very impressed at how it performs and how quiet it is. My original plan was to locate it outside in a lean-to housing, but it's really not necessary.

I have finally got round to installing a ductwork system with blast gates to cut down on faffage and, I have to be honest, was very concerned the unit would not be up to it. So far, it has 4 branches over a 4m run:
12" trade quality, floor-standing bandsaw
12" table saw
10" under-and-over planer
65mm outlet for router table and power tools

Result: outstanding! The largest test so far was planing large baulks of seasoned oak for some structural work and, despite there being some fairly tight bends in the 100mm hose (which I'm going to rectify), no blockages! I suppose the ultimate test will be if I plane any green timber. Fortunately, that's normally not necessary as that will be structural and not decorative, so I may never need to.

I note some adverse comment on quality from other reviewers but, to be realistic, to get that performance and quietness from a sub-£200 unit has to be applauded. If I have one small gripe, it's with the castor system, which has rather small wheels and, in my opinion, should have the revolving castors at the other end (they're not interchangable). However, I don't need to move it now, so happy days!

Overall verdict: I honestly don't think you get better for the money. I feel confident enough in it to extend the ducting another 4m to my lathe!
