My wife bought me one of these for Christmas. Didn't have a chance to use it till March as too cold to work in my shed!! Bought a Hobby Planer Thicknesser in the meantime, used this square to set the fence. All OK till I tried marking out the back panel for a small cabinet - couldn't get it square!! Checked the square and it isn't!!! so the oak I prepared isn't square either. Swore a bit then took it back to my local store. Very helpful and apologetic - watched while I checked the replacement one for accuracy - spot on.

Bit annoyed about the wasted time and oak, but very impressed with the good service at Sittingbourne store.

Perfect Service

Bought this set a while ago as my first combination square and as I needed the protractor to make a ladder. More than adequate for my needs, nice weighty feel to it and as accurate as I needed. Managed to smash up the rule which was disappointing, I logged an email with Axminster and the following day received a call saying that they would have to contact the manufacturer (in Taiwan I think) but they had a spare rule from a returned set if that was OK. Blown away, they shipped it in the post and it arrived 2 days later for free. Amazing service Axminster, couldn't ask for more. Thank you.

Excellent product and good value

Received two weeks ago. Square and protractor are spot on. Not sure if I will use the centering tool.
The ruler is perfect, clear an easy to read.
I took 1 star off for quality as the foam had come way a little in the corner. This was soon fixed with super glue.

I baulked at the cost of the Starrett combination square, and hoped the Axminster precision one would be very nearly as good. As one other reviewer commented, it is covered in black grease, which takes an age to clean off. Once I'd done that I discovered, to my amazement, that it was inaccurate. And not by a small amount - around a tenth of an inch per foot. I took it back in person, and was met with indifference, although I was offered an immediate refund. I went and checked the store demo model, and it was out by about the same amount. Since two out of two of the Axminster "Precision" combination squares were woefully inaccurate I'd suggest anyone who has bought one checks it before using it in anger.

Exudes black gunk

Just used this again and got annoyed enough to write a review. This thing comes covered in black gunk. Of course it needs oil, but the combination of oil and black paint really makes this unusable. You clean it up, then as soon as you swivel the protractor, it exudes more. It marks everything it comes into contact with.

I also find the corners very rough to handle.

It's well-made, no doubt (though the protractor was slightly off when I bought it -- 0 deg and 180 deg didn't line up).

In a metal workshop, where oil and grease are par for the course, it'll be fine, but in a home or woodworking setting, it's a bit heavy duty. Think Isambard Kingdom Brunel, not Steve Jobs.
