In Detail

The Rider 2-in-1 plane combines the functions of a bull-nose plane using the small nose section or a chisel plane with the nosepiece removed. Cast from fine grey iron, it is precision machined, precision ground and polished to ensure accurate results. The sole is flat and the sides are square to the sole. The 27mm(1-1/16") full width blade is micro adjustable for precise control of the depth of cut. The blade is a fraction of a smidgen wider than the body making it easier to work into a corner. The polished, arched lever cap makes the plane comfortable and easy to use. A shim between the body and nosepiece allow you to vary the width of the mouth for fine or coarse work. This plane’s original intention was for trimming of joints when it came to fine-tuning for the final fit of the joint. A function it ideally fulfils today.

Rider planes only require the bare minimum of initial preparation. The blade is oil quenched, high carbon spring steel, hardened and tempered to HRC 63, and only requires a little honing before use. Every plane undergoes careful inspection in Axminster to ensure consistent quality. We are confident that Axminster Rider planes represent a good standard in traditional, quality plane manufacture and great value.

Poor Quality

This plane looked perfect for what I do and at a great price, so I thought. Sadly the cast is of poor quality after spending some time trying to get the nose off I gave up and rang the help line. I was advised a tap with a rubber mallet might be needed to initially remove it. So with phone in one hand I have a few taps with a rubber mallet which caused the thin area of cast near the front to break. I used very little force sadly rather than good value it is expensive rubbish. That said the customer service was good.

Third time lucky

The first one of these I purchased had the sole ground out of square to the sides, as did the replacement. but the third plane was spot on. It's a comfortable little plane with a solid build and a nice heft to it. The out of squareness issue was irritating, but very pleasantly and speedily dealt with by Axminster's excellent customer service. Thank you.

Extremely pleased

A wonderful little tool. Weighs like a much dearer plane.
It's easy to adjust, when held in the right way, though slightly excessive backlash between the iron and the adjuster nut, and the caps spin-wheel is at a very slight angle. Neither of these things detract from the planes performance though.
The finish is excellent on all of the important surfaces and seems to made from good quality metals. The sole and the sides are perfectly square.
I recently bought a lie-nielsen-no-60-1-2rn-rebating-block-plane as a gift for my boss and although the difference in quality is apparent, as you'd expect, I doubt the nielsen would be ashamed to be seen out with the rider.
