In Detail

Woodworkers love wood, so we decided to fit these Rider bevel edge chisels with handles made from dense European Hornbeam, chosen for its resilience. Sanded smooth and given a light oil finish, the Hornbeam has a superb feel in the hand. The wider chisels have slightly larger handles to maintain balance across the range of sizes. It is a subtle difference, but enough to make each chisel feel 'right' in the hand. Each handle ends in a polished stainless steel ferrule with a shock absorbing leather washer between the handle and the chisel’s bolster.

The blades are fine-grained, chrome manganese steel and carefully hardened and tempered to 59 HRC. Sharpened and ground with a 25° bevel, the blades require only final honing to achieve a fine, long lasting edge (we suggest a 30° micro-bevel). In cross section, the blades are slimmer than a standard bevel edge chisel and ground with a narrower land on each side, a little over 1mm. This allows much improved clearance when working into a corner such as cleaning dovetails. The blades are approximately 100mm long with the overall length varying between 265mm to 280mm. European made.

Good overall

These are good chisels with the biggest plus point being their slim profile. I have just one fault to point out, that is that the 3mm dovetail chisel is in fact a firmer ground chisel so useless for small pin dovetails. Is there an issue that prevents them grinding the 3mm to the proper profile. I now have to buy another make of chisel with the proper profile.

Good chisels once set up properly

This chisel arrived very quickly and was well packaged. After working on the chisel to flatten the back and sharpen the edge I was very happy with it. It is light weight, comfortable to hold and maintains an edge well.
I expected to have to work on the chisel for it to be ready to work with but was not too happy with how much work was required. The back had a huge hollow which in itself wasn't a problem to remove, the main issue was a sharp edged groove about an inch up from the edge. It was so pronounced that my fingernails would catch on it when running my fingers up the steel. This took quite a bit of work to remove. The bevel also had small groove on the side but wasn't an issue to remove since i re-ground the entire edge anyway.
I assume that these problems are a rarity and just a risk of buying budget chisels. These aren't big enough problems to stop me buying more.

Awesome for the money

I second what John has said. I ordered the 32, just to see what these are like, no risk at £12 ish. Needed some flattening, but not a great deal, honed in quickly with a neat wire to remove and strop. I gave it a test paring some stock down and chopped some joints out, so long as you lightly strop it after few heavy cuts, it seems to keep its edge well. Handle works well for me, nice to have a proper go on something without a hoop and striking face, feels good.

Happy so far

Bought the 20mm & 32mm chisels today to complete my mixed set of bevel edge chisels - the chisel backs needed some flatting / polishing, the handles are unfinished allowing you to choose an oil or shellac finish; only a small amount of honing needed to get a sharp edge. Early days, but the handles seem comfortable in the hand, good price. Worth a look!
