In Detail

Both Rider spokeshaves are in the traditional style, 250mm(10") long with a fully adjustable blade. The spokeshave body is ductile cast iron, with a tough black enamel finish. The well-rounded handles and thumb rests offer comfort and control when cutting.

Twin knurled adjusting screws control both depth and lateral adjustment of the 55mm(2.1/8") wide blade. This adjustment allows very fine setting for delicate work. The O1 steel blade is oil quenched, hardened and tempered to HRC 63, and only requires a little honing before use.

Rider spokeshaves are available with either flat or curved base. The primary use of the flat base spokeshave is cutting chamfers and working convex shapes. The curved base spokeshave allows you to shape concave surfaces.

Rider spokeshaves only require the bare minimum of initial preparation. Every spokeshave undergoes careful inspection in Axminster to ensure consistent quality. We are confident that Axminster Rider spokeshaves represent a good standard in traditional, quality and great value.

I was hoping for better quality from Axminster. Maybe I was unlucky with the one I got - however the Rider no. 80 I bought at the same time isn't much better - but the casting for the blade bed was lumpy and misaligned meaning the blade never sits flat or is ever registered properly. It's a nice looking thing, but the second hand Stanley I bought for £10 is much better.

Good buy at the price

There's not much to separate one well-made 151-style spokeshave from another, but at this price point many are certainly not well made. Like the last reviewer I bought both types and have been very impressed with their functionality. The blade holds a good edge in oak, the adjustment is smooth and easy, shavings do not foul against the casting. The bottoms of the caps are machined to meet the blade closely; one of the ones I bought had a bad casting flaw that was not machined out, but Axminster swapped it without hesitation.

The brass is a little gratuitous, I can't believe it's any more than eye candy but if it's not compromising the design in any way I must say I like the way it looks. The paint also chipped pretty much straight away on the leading edge of the body casting, though the same was true of the Irwin/Record spokeshave I owned before.

I would highly recommend the spokeshaves in this range, I have found them superior to the Irwin/Record they replaced in almost every way.

Nice quality for the price

Thought I would take a chance ordering these Spokeshaves, both flat and rounded versions, as no one had reviewed them yet but glad I did. The castings are very good quality, machining is accurate and they work extremely well straight out of the box. With a little honing of the blade they are excellent. For the money I can't fault them in fact I think they are an absolute bargain at this price.
