sloppy!

this is potentially a very useful item but im afraid i have to agree with those who comment that the fit between the two parts is far too sloppy. this makes it inaccurate... indeed if not used very carefully it is significantly out of square. pity

Bit of a shame

I have had one of these for about 16 years or so and love it, it's a really useful tool that people always comment on but I've just bought another one as a present for someone and I can't believe how poor the quality is in comparison. Unfortunately I'll be sending it back for a refund. It's not only the plastic knob being used instead of a metal one but the whole thing is just poor. There's also a lot of play between the two parts so you wouldn't be able to rely on it just being square each time you adjust it, you'd have to hold it tight to one side then tighten the knob unlike my older one which is really nicely machined and you can just adjust and use. I guess this is the way it goes sometimes, reducing manufacturing costs to increase profit but sad to say I think this one is a bit too far.

A brilliant little device. Use it and you will know it is a valuable asset to your workshop.

Layout Square

Bought one of these some years ago and would not be without it. I recently purchased another one as a gift for my brother, same excellent quality which now includes a wooden case. However, what was a high quality, extremely useful bit of kit is now totally let down by the horrible plastic thumb screw which replaces the black phosphated steel original. Come on Axminster, you have let yourselves down on this penny pinching change. For this reason I have given the thumb screw a quality rating of one star. The original fabric pouch could also be included for use when transporting tools.

Very useful

I have been surprised how much I use this tool. Besides marking and measuring stuff, it is also good for placing things, e.g a guide rail. In this way you can sometimes get to higher precision than marking would allow.
