CBN (cubic boron nitride) is second only in hardness to diamond. CBN is especially suitable for working with hardened steels above 55 HRC. In fact, in this respect CBN is preferable to diamond. Compared to standard abrasive belts, these are expensive. However, depending on how much or how often or what it is you need to sharpen, a CBN belt may well be worth serious consideration.
CBN abrasive belts achieve outstanding results on hardened steels. The construction of the belt consists of CBN particles galvanically plated in nickel forming a permanent bond. The abrasive itself has extreme wear resistance ensuring a very long service life and a consistent quality surface finish. Another huge factor is their ability to dissipate heat. Bluing of a high carbon steel blade is the last thing you want to see. In use, the CBN produces hardly any sparks and needs only light pressure to perform brilliantly. You may well find there is no longer a need to quench the tool’s edge as when using other abrasives. These belts fit the Ultimate Edge Sharpening Machine.
