In Detail

Trade Classification & 3 Year Guarantee

This is the larger of our bench top Trade pillar drills. Robustly made from cast iron and machined steel giving high strength and stability. It has a highly accurate chuck spindle assembly, running in NSK ball race bearings. The quill housing is a good fit within the headstock casting, giving consistent drilling. Powered by a smooth running 650W induction motor, there are 12 belt speeds between 120-2,580rpm. The Japanese made belts are of the multi-vee type, chosen for maximum grip and the lowest level of vibration. The belt cover also has a safety switch to prevent the drill being run with the cover open. The down feed is via a one-piece cast iron handle with soft rubber grips and there is an accurate drilling depth control. A quality 1-16mm keyless chuck is fitted. The chuck guard is electrically interlocked for safety and is easily adjustable for height. The switch system has a separate locking emergency stop switch, plus there is a switch for the integrated LED work light. Table height is controlled via a rack and pinion system; the whole table assembly can be swivelled away to allow the base to be used as a work support. This trade rated drill offers a whole lot more but is still reasonably compact in size. If you are looking for a floor standing model of similar size, please refer to product code 102554. A great choice for any trade or school workshop looking for a top performing bench mounted pillar drill. Please note, morticing attachments are not suitable for this machine.

Minor cons:

First I must extend my appreciation to Axminster for their super efficient service and polite helpful staff. I went to the Warrington branch in the afternoon to look the drill over and after inspection I ordered one, it was delivered the following lunch time ... you can't beat that for service.
The drill itself is a very good machine, and my son had it put together in 90 minutes ... this included him lifting and installing the head all by himself.
The only niggle I had with it was involving the depth stop.
Axminster state "there is an accurate drilling depth control" ..... really ? the problem is that you can't access it as it is behind another part of the drill. I figured a way to overcome this and now the depth stop is out in the open and can be used as it was intended.

Nice Drill but Spec out of Date

I received my drill which arrived within 2 days of ordering the manual is excellent. Managed to chip the pain finish with the bolts that hold the column to the base (quite a large piece came away - going to see If Axminister can provide me with a pot of touch up), A simple modification would be to provide washer.

if space or weight is an issue check before you buy - the website says item weighs 82kgs but the machine itself says 75kgs, I also found some of the measurements were incorrect.

The chuck also seems to have been upgraded the one supplied say for drills 1-16mm and not 3-16mm as listed on the website.

Still setting it up further updates to follow.

Now fully assembled and bolted down to my steel topped Bott bench. Table square to drill axis is both planes after a little adjustment on the angle mechanism. TIR on chuck measured at less than 2 thou' with quill extended. Runs smoothly and quiet. Far better than others I have seen at a similar price. Axminster were great to deal with and even sent me a small pot of touch up paint FOC (just in case I get any chips or marks during use). Axminster have worked hard with the manufacturer to evolve this drill to this standard. Thank you.

Just the Job

I have just bought this for my home workshop. It arrived on time in a stout carton on it's own small pallet. It was very well packaged and all parts were present. Bare machined parts were coated to prevent corrosion during shipment. I am assembling it and installing now and have been measuring and checking as I proceed. The main column is square to the base in both planes and substantial. I put a thin flat washers under the heads of each set screw which fastens the main column to the base to avoid the screw heads damaging the paint. More to follow....
