Rider plane irons are made from high carbon, O1 spring steel and are 3mm thick. They are hardened and tempered to RC63 resulting in excellent edge retention characteristics, allowing a razor sharp edge to be honed.

A great replacement ironAfter reading the previous review, I purchased this plane iron to replace my first ever 43 year old Stanley Bailey pattern 41/2 and it works fantastically well. The steel is of very good quality and sharpens very well where I have been recently converted from oilstone sharpening to using 1000+ grit wet and dry paper on a marble sub-base. I had to widen the mouth of the plane slightly to accommodate the thicker blade and to allow for shavings to efficiently clear and this was easily achieved with a sharp flat file.

Good replacement for old stanleyBought to replace the iron in my old Stanley no 7. Used with the original chip breaker. Fitted just fine, and took nice shavings in mahogany straight out the box. Can't see any reason to buy a more expensive blade, would rather buy 2 and have a sharp one on hand. Will buy more to replace blades on other old stanleys.

Axminster Rider 5 1/2 plane ironI bought this for a 5 1/2 Stanley Bailey plane. The original iron had was worn out after 28 years use, I decided to upgrade to the Axminster rider plane iron as it was not much difference in price to a Stanley replacement but was a thicker iron.
