Not enough power for serious work. Should have twice the power!

I have an older model with almost exactly the same specs (PEX-12AE, Variable speed, 125 mm diam disc.) After using my sander for many years, I've concluded that the power needed by a Random Orbit sander should be AT LEAST ABOVE 500 Watts in order to have a really useful sander of this type. Even when my Bosch PEX-12AE has 340 watts, and was made in Switzerland (so quality is tops)... It is still too weak. I find it underpowered, being very similar in sanding speed to my smaller DeWalt 1/4 sheet orbital palm sander, which is even less powerful (200 watts)!
Believe me, get a Makita BO-6040 that is 6.6 Amperes, a real sander! Unfortunately (as always), there are DUMB people at Makita that DISCONTINUED that extraordinary model, and the newer one (BO-6050) is NOT AS NICE and definitely not as well designed. The BO-6040 has a LOW and LARGE DIAMETER body, so that it is easier to control because it places your hands CLOSER to the work. (You will need BOTH of your hands because it is powerful, but in the small orbit setting, it is a delight to useas a polisher too. In the "high" power setting, it is very fast and you will be sanding at a high rate, but with no marks!
The only thing you could hate in the BO-6040, is that after using it, you will NEVER go back to a lesser power sander! Save your money for a really powerful one that has the proper low centre of gravity and ergonomics. Don't let the high price fool you, a cheap underpowered random orbit sander is slow and a waste of money.

Excellent little sander

Owned this a few years now and apart from one issue that was my fault it's been outstanding. Experienced the same as Tatu after a couple of years, going through discs in no time. Problem was due to accidentally sanding without a pad in place. Bought a replacement backing pad (http://www.axminster.co.uk/bosch-backing-pad-for-gex-125-1-ae-sander-501888) and good as new. Great little piece of kit and my go to sander for everything from flattening old plaster walls to final sanding hardwood prior to finish

Best sander in this class

It's a great tool for part time wood work.
I think I know what Tatu did or someone used it incorrectly. They used it without a sandpaper, degrading the micro hooks. A few uses should not degrade the velcro that quickly.

excellent product

This is the first random orbital sander I have owned and it knocks spots off the standard sanders for both speed and quality of finish it produces. It is robust, easy to use and vibration and noise are comfortable for intermittent use. I agree with the other reviewer that the vacuum connector should be part of the package. Such penny pinching does not enhance a reputation and in the same vein neither does providing a single sanding sheet!! That said is is a good quality product and sits well alongside other Bosch products in my workshop. I am an amateur woodworker and woodcarver but I do like to work with good quality tools. The service provided ny Axminster cannot be faulted.

The best on market by far

These Bosch sanders are a gem, We use them daily in our workshop along with its bigger brother the GEX 150 and have been using them with years we would not change to another brand for anyone

They are super pieces of kit

We have had no issues with the sandpaper not sticking its all about looking after the machine and they will look after you

Murphy Workbenches are a huge Bosch fan, 90% of our gear is Bosch
