A blank of at least 20mm square will be required to make these pens. 37/64" and 15/32" drill bits required. When using a mandrel to make these pens, bushing set 502691 will be required.

Nice quality

My first time getting pens from axminster, and definitely not my last, was a bit worried about the drill size and pen blank but all went perfectly well, love the way it looks and the weight of it, will be getting these in bulks...

Brilliant Looks - Indifferent Quality - Nice feel

This is a one mother of a pen when it is made. Whether you make the rollerball or the fountain pen you will know you are holding something substantial. The rollerball cartridge is beautifully smooth while the fountain pen is a joy to use. But it is not all sweetness and light.
I have repeatedly had trouble with the bushings. I've bought three sets now in an attempt to get just one set that produced a snug fit on the clip end with the OD exactly the correct size for the clip and clip cap. Usually it comes up a few thou too small and there is a noticeable edge. I've now taken to disregarding the bushing at this point and making the barrels slightly oversized to over come this.
Perhaps the biggest problem is the clip itself. I have made 10 of these now and four have had the clip snap off with little effort when attempting to clip it inside a suit pocket. There appears to be two different batches in circulation. one has noticeably fewer clasps crimped onto the cap circlip. The other has six crimped clasps. Whatever, you are advised to discretely reinforce the bond with CA and Kicker before assembly.

If manufacturing the fountain pen be aware that it is easy to damage the connection between cartridge and nib. Always select the correct cartridge as very similar looking units wont work and will leak.
One interesting point is that the two variants are all but identical. You can retro fit the rollerball assembly to the fountain pen body and vice versa in a jiffy without tools which helps keep stock levels balanced and customers happy.

Nice Pen - Bushings fine!

I was worried about the bushings having seen the previous reviews, but mine were perfect, so perhaps Axminster have sorted it out. I used a spare piece of seasoned cherry with Danish oil and friction polish and this pen looks great on it. My tip for you is to push in the centre coupler only a little bit at first. This allows you to screw the top and bottom together and check that the woodgrain (or acrylic pattern) lines up when fully tight. If the grain is not lined up, you can rotate the coupler to the correct position before driving it home. I use my bench vice with cardboard squares taped to the jaws for all pressing and my disc sander to square up the blanks after gluing in the barrels.

Executive pen kits

This was my first attempt at pen making so chose this kit as a gift. The bushings were impossible to fit easily into the tubes on both the lid and the barrell I checked this on the other two kits purchased and they were all the same, so nievely thought this was the way they should be and fitted them using the pen press, made a good job of the turning (very proud)! But could not get the bushings out and in doing so broke the acrylic turning, what a waste of a pen kit lesson learnt, be aware of the bushings supplied for this kit, wish I had read the reviews first
Happy turning

very nice pen

The pen itself is very nice quality. It is a lot chunkier than most of the pens, obviously executives need a nice fat pen. The writing mechanism is top notch, the ink flows freely from both the fountain pen and the rollerball. The finish of the parts is first class.

The transistions between the wood and the metal parts needs to be very precise as there are no helpful beads to mask a poor fit.

As the other reviewer has stated the bushings are not as high a quality. The cap bushings were very tight and the body bushings were loose, but a bit of plumbers tape brought them up to size. The outer dimensions of the bushings wee spot on however. I am not quite sure why the pen kits was marked down for this rather than the bushing set.
