Backing off blades

I bought this extra extra course DMT continuous diamond plate to do the preliminary flattening of some 130 year old Robert Sorby and Marples chisels I inherited from my Great grandfather. I’d been using the chisels for the past 25 years ( Im a professionally trained furniture maker and Joiner- schooled at Rycotewood in the mid 90s ) but was fed up with only ever having a very small portion of truely flat and polished blade back to sharpen on.
This diamond plate did the job very quickly and saved me hours and hours over using a standard 240 grit waterstone. It leaves a course and grim finish but Once flat I just went through My Waterstone collection and polished them up to a flat mirror 4000 grit finish very quickly.
Using this course diamond plate is not a pleasure though, horrible feel to it and feels utterly wrong if you are used to using natural oil stones or Waterstones . The bottom line is that it is flat and will stay flat over a prolonged flattening job and is much cheaper and faster to use over a long period than a piece of glass and abrasive paper.
Good product, good price, service and quality that you can expect from Axminster tools.

Cost equals quality

It seems an expensive option but I bought this particular plate only for flattening waterstones. It works superbly, quickly flattening stones accurately which then produce the best possible edge and flat back. I also have two other DMT plates used for preparing plane frogs, initial work on blades and chisels, all are excellent
