In Detail

This is a great tape measure for the small, precise measurements and a good combination of size and usefulness. The tape is 3m long, with both metric and imperial graduations. A window on top of the case allows you to take spot-on measurements in a recess and then transfer them accurately. The tape has a neat compact case, without a belt clip, which means you can easily slip it into your pocket. A flip out tab on the underside of the case provides a means to accurately scribe a radius or circle onto a workpiece. Made in Germany.

Brilliant tape for the price

I love Festool tools so I could be biased but usually not. This tape is made for Festool by BMI which is a good starting point.

The tape has a simple lock, it has a clear top window giving an accurate measure to the back edge of the tape. There is a foldout tab which has a small hard metal point. Combined with an eyelet hole near the tape end this allows quick and accurate use for marking circles.

And, it looks good! For its cost, amazing.

Festool model for accurate measurements manufactured by BMI

Tage Allan Larsson ran a small company making tape measures named TAL-meter. To me, his 3 meter version is the height of tape measures. The original of this product is no longer available, as to why this Festool by BMI will have to substitute.

The tape of this one is less rigid and more narrow than on my TAL-meter, and that I think can be something that makes the Festool product less useful at the big construction site. Otherwise, it's close to perfect.

Both external and internal measurements are very accurate. Reading internal measurements from the top of the tape measure is very easy, while external measures are a little bit less. This is partly due to the combined metric and imperial scales, but mainly an issue when measuring from edge to edge and locking with body of the unit against the edge. Taking the reading would have been facilitated by a small recess in the front of the body, just above the opening for the tape.

The locking mechanism is easy to reach and locking does not require much power, which to me is good when taking internal readings. Once locked, pulling the tape unlocks it; a nice feature I think, but possibly a small risk when transferring longer measurements.

Setting off lengths works very nicely, as the tape isn't rigid and the markings on it are clear and distinct.

This tape measure is equipped with a mechanism for drawing circles. How to do it is very clearly shown on the side of the house. It works well, with good enough accuracy.

For being Festool, price is benign. That almost makes me suspicious
