In Detail

The Big Brother system 2 from Hamlet consists of a heavy duty hollowing tool designed for producing medium to large hollow forms on your woodturning lathe. A robust handle with a comfortable grip incorporates a 16mm diameter shaft to which the cleverly designed cutting tip is attached. A tool designed for deep hollowing needs to be heavy and well balanced, and weighing in at approximately 2.2kg, this tool will not disappoint. The swivelling tip which connects directly to the end of the main 5/8" diameter stem will reach deep into most areas of your vessel. A curved stem also 5/8" diameter is available as an optional extra for reaching under overhanging rims. A side handle and tool post gate giving excellent control of the tool are available as optional accessories. Sharpening is simple, take a diamond or ceramic whetstone and in a circular movement hone around the cutting edge, a few strokes will be enough. Do not hone across the cutting edge and DO NOT attempt to sharpen the inside. Do not attempt to sharpen the tool by grinding. Be sure to watch our online video to see how well this tool performs.

Possibly the most pointless tool ever...

Disclaimer: I am not (yet) a customer of Axminster, and therefore I bought this 'tool' from a retail outlet here in Australia.
Alarm bells in my head were ringing soon after I bought this tool: the supplier told me that the manufacturer had refused to supply instruction on the basis that "if the user doesn't know how to use this, they shouldn't be buying it" which sort of turns customer service (let alone safety concerns) on its head.
The tool, as a hollower, is worthless - in fact the only good thing about this tool is the handle. It won't cut as demonstrated, it clogs too easily and it chatters badly. Worse, installing the hollowing head is a nightmare each and every time I want to use the tool with a scraper attachment. It seems to have a mind of its own!
I get better results using a rounded scraper.....go figure!

excellent tool

Have had this tool for a few months now, and can say its one of the best hollowing tools I own, when set up correctly and presented to the wood properly it cuts perfectly, no need to remove the guard, it is there for a reason

not impressed

i bought the hamlet hollowing tool big brother system2 so far i can't make it do the same as the video shows .setting the cut has to be very fine otherwise it clogs up.
went online and found other people have had the same problem, one chap suggested filing down the cutter guard .at the price it is i am disapointed and feel the video should spend more time on the cutter setting .i will continue to try to master it and review again if successful. i have phoned hamlet still waiting for reply
