In Detail

Oire Nomi are the standard chisel used by Japanese carpenters and cabinet makers. These chisels have a blade length of approximately 62mm(2.1/2") with longer shoulders and tangs. They are well balanced and will take a blow from a hammer for heavier work as well as taking the thinnest of paring cuts for fine work. The overall length is approximately 230mm(9"). These professional grade chisels are made using high carbon steel (White Paper #2 steel) laminated to a softer low carbon backing steel. They are hardened to over HRC 65 and will hold a razor edge for far longer than an equivalent western chisel. They feature red oak handles, fitted with steel hoops finished with a mushroomed top ready to go.

Poor factory finish meant 2 hours of grinding to true it up.

Now that I have spent more than 2 hours sorting out the correct angle on this, it cuts like a dream and certainly better than anything I have used before.
The issue was the grinding angle, as supplied, was a little over 40° and nowhere near square, the leading edge was at angle of about 15° off.
I have now ground true and at 30° with no micro bevel, progressively up to a 3000 grit waterstone, then leather stropping.
Having done all this, the chisel cuts very smoothly in a variety of woods; I have successfully tried oak, beech and sycamore; the finished cuts are wonderfully smooth.
So, 10 out of 10 for a first rate product, but I didn't expect to spend so much time and effort on a single chisel. Quality control seems to have had an off day???
BTW - without the Veritas honing guide, I don't think I would have bee able to sort this...

These are DESIGNED to have a hollow back in use, grinding them flat will ruin the chisel - don't do it.

Very happy

Very helpful in-store helping me select Wat was best for me.
Firstly , these chisels have hollow ground backs which required flattening, I was aware of these but didn't realise just how deep the hollow was.
Flattening the backs took approximately 1 hour per chisel using diamond stones.
The ground angle on the blades weren't very accurate , normally for chisels its 25 degrees but as I didn't have the time to grind them at that I ground them to 30 degrees and sharpened the edge with a micro bevel.
I then honed on a leather, the chisels haven't been used fully yet but i was very happy with the result despite how long it took to prepare.
Obviously these chisels are hand made so don't expect perfect pristine looking tools.
Overall very happy

Clearance pricing inaccurate/misleading

Yes, I agree. Beautiful chisels however disappointed that prices listed as starting "From £24.02 Inc. VAT" yet the smallest 3mm chisel is £43.94 Inc. VAT. Where is the advertised £38.92 saving here?
