In Detail

A really great tool to use, almost impossible to clog as waste falls straight through the lattice. It is actually made up of strips of double edge saw blade material, welded and pinned to form a rigid blade 25mm wide by 230mm long, coarse on one side and fine on the other. Unusually for a Japanese tool it cuts on the push stroke. Blade length 230mm.

Simply an indispensable tool.

I needed a rasp for my woodworking shop, and I liked the idea of this one as opposed to standard ones, and the reviews seemed good, but little did I realise how much I'd be using it.

I use it for many of the jobs for which one would normally use a plane or a spokeshave, such as jointing, making ends perfectly flat and aligned, as well as for general shaping. In many ways it is easier to use than planes, it makes short work of knots without slowing down or stopping, as a plane not honed and aligned to perfection would, and it just simply is one of my favourite and indispensable tools now. I intend to get the version with the plane-style handle for thicknessing boards too as the handle on this one isn't as suitable for that.

I mostly use the least aggressive side as I can do that single-handedly, but with a workpiece properly supported on the workbench and adding a (gloved) hand to the back of it, the coarser side makes short work of many tasks.

Since I mostly use one side, and in the same hand, mine is actually bending a bit to the side now from the diagonal movement, but it remains perfectly flat, which is the most important thing, and I am sure I could bend it back if necessary.

Highly recommended!

Bought this for greenwoodworking. It kind of evolved from that. No bells no whistles. Tip dont pull lift on the non-cut stroke. Yet another quality buy.

I've seen these about before and decided to purchase this one for a guitar building project I'm doing. Works an absolute treat, better than expected. The only thing I will mention is when using it, make sure you use a gloves as I now have some fairly rough skin on my left hand. Live and learn!

Wipes the floor with a 'standard' surform tool - really is much, much better than others.

This tool allows you to be artistic yet measured when getting into a work piece. It demands to be used at speed, and breaking into a sweat to get the best results. I transformed our ugly, varnished, right-angled edged mantle piece top into a beautiful natural looking finished piece. With nice 90 degree curves. It looks softer to the eye with a natural eroded feel.

This tool is easy to use, and in my opinion one of the essentials for everyones tool kit.
