In Detail

This type of tool is essential to many of the trades found in woodwork. The Shinwa sliding bevel features an anodised aluminium stock and a 1.5mm thick stainless steel blade. The best aspect is the locking mechanism located on the end of the stock so it never gets in the way. The thumb screw clamps the blade very firmly, and allows the bevel to be flipped for use on either side. The blade can be set at any angle from 0 to 180°. Use to transfer or lay out angles. Stock 150mm, blade 250mm.

Done the rest of time

I bought one of these 14 years ago when I started my apprentiship and it's now time to finally replace it. Its been all over the world and marked a staggering array of angles. cant complain with that. I'd get one if I was you.

A little embarrassed to admit it, but it took me a while to work out how to lock the blade (what looks like a lever on the bottom is actually a screw). Assume the earlier reviewer had the same problem, because once locked, it's really solid. I've knocked mine onto the floor, and it hasn't budged. My only hesitation is the weight: being aluminium, it weighs nothing, so can be easily rocked/moved. But it's well-made, and the cut-out in the blade is very useful.

Best yet

I have several British bevels collected over the years but this Shinwa beasts them all into a cocked hat. Can't understand why our British tool makers could not have come up with a similar bevel gauge to this one. Will have to get some more as when doing non standard angles I like to keep several bevels on the go set at the required angles until job finished.

Maybe mines a dud?!?

Couldn't believe the reviews on this. I bought this for the end tightening, obviously meaning you don't have any protrusions when trying to take the bevel.
Quite simply though, it doesn't lock tight after a couple of months. I have a smaller screw knob bevel that I use all the time, this comes out only when I need a second bevel, for example on cut roofs. I CONSTANTLY have to check the setting as it moves with the slightest touch.
Good idea, terrible execution!!

Fantastic value

Just been looking at the same item on Amazon at £57 and was about to buy but remembered I'd seen it in an Axminster mail shot for £14.96
Can't wait to use it as I've been buying Japanese tools from Axminster for a while now. and they are great.
