Description

In Detail

With a powerful Input 200W motor the AFS-1000 B is intended for the bigger more commercial workshop; it needs a secure mounting capable of holding a 40kg static load, at least 2 metres off the ground. The air passes through the electrostatic pre-filter into the main pleated filter, filtering 98% of all particles 5 microns in size and 85% of all particles 1 micron in size. The remote control unit has three settings for the motor speed and three different time settings of 2 hours, 4 hours and 8 hours, which can be used to clear the workshop after work has finished for the day. An optional charcoal filter is available, which will neutralise odours and harmful organic fumes or particles including pollen. Another optional accessory is a handy ceiling mounting kit consisting of 4 lengths of flexible stainless steel wire with screw eyes and bolt up crimps allows the machine to be positioned out of the way. Supplied with electrostatic pre-filter, main filter and 4 mounting eyes. The machine runs reasonably quietly with noise levels of speed 1: 62 dB. speed 2: 66 dB. and speed 3: 68 dB.

Poor electronics

Bought this 4 years ago. Initially great - quiet, efficient, did what it said on the tin. Then it started running only on high speed after 2 years. Stopped working after 2.5 years. Web searches suggested this is fairly common and several recommended replacing condensers on the circuit board . I could not find a UK source for a new board so it sat in the workshop for 18 months. An email to Jet USA revealed that Axminster sell new boards - since fitted and and AFS-100B is now fine. Why don't Axminter list it on their web site and how long before before the new board fails?

very poor

we have had these units for a few years at a college, and when they are working they are good. But the cheap circuit board inside only ever lasts just over a year, so its a case of ordering them quite often. But guess what... the part is readily available... which tells me its a common fault.

Essential kit

An absolute essential kit to have in a workshop, whether wood working facilities or surfboard shaping cabins (although for this last one I'm sure a larger system would be preferable).

Silent enough in mode 1. Very practical to have a timer. Filters will last a lot, provided you clean the blue filter once in a while (vacuum with soft brush first, air compressor after outside).

Ours it's about 8 years old. No problem whatsoever.

As a downside, it would be great if green filters (finest particle filters) could be turned inside out to be blown and cleaned.

Caution: Even though it's made to clean the air in the workshop - you must use proper extraction and air filter masks (Trend, APF 10 Evolution, or 3M) so to prevent nose and lung diseases and other health hazards!

Look inside the filter before first use...

When I first got this air filter I turned it on and thought it was very noisy, too noisy to work in the same room. It was a shame, but it worked well, so I just put up with it.

After a few days I was curious as to what was actually inside the box, as I hadn't bothered to look when I first got it, so I took the front filter out, and behind it is an elaborate pleated bag type thing, so I took that out and found...

about six massive blocks of polystyrene jammed in around the motor to keep it secure during tansit.

I pulled the blocks out and the machine all of a sudden became much much quieter.

I think the polystyrene blocks were creating noise in two ways, one, they were blocking the air flow and creating a turbulent air noise, and two, they were preventing the fan motor from being isolated by its isolation mounts. The blocks were transferring all the motor vibration to the case.

The moral of the story is, remove those blocks before judging how loud the thing is.

Other than that, all good.
