Only heavy duty mobile base on UK market.

I have bought 2 of these Jet HD mobile bases from Axminster for woodworking machines. One was purchased direct from their Warrington Store and the other was mail order.

The first was fitted to a Minimax T50 Spindle Moulder weighting 338Kg. It was easy to adjust the base to fit but as with all very heavy machines, care must be taken trying to lift the machine onto the base. This base, with its largish wheels, allowed easy manoeuvrability of the spindle moulder around our concrete floored workshop.

The second was purchased for a Meber SR700 Bandsaw weighting 470Kg. As the bandsaw base was about 100CM long the standard base would not fit. After waiting a year for my blacksmith to make longer side rails we then found another use for this base under a large Cromartie pottery kiln weighting 270Kg. Longer side rails are available in USA but Axminster do not import them. When I enquired about availability directly from USA they told me I had to purchase 100 at a time! The large 8' 4" tall bandsaw still remains static. Come on Axminster and stock some 100+CM side rails to cope for longer machinery.

I have no hesitation in recommending these expensive Jet HD bases as there is nothing else on the UK market that can support 500+Kg weight. As always, you get what you pay for!

WARNING: Beware if proposing to use this base on a band saw.

I bought the base at the same time as I bought the Axminster Band-saw model AWHB5450N (this has a blade 3405mm long and is for semi trade use). It was assembled to the base by the two Axminster employees who delivered it.

Later, when I tried to move the machine into position over my concrete garage floor (typical non-smooth finish) the entire machine fell over. I had to get help to lift it.
The base and saw assembly are dangerously unstable.

With careful help I moved it into position and bolted the whole thing to the concrete floor. I did not dare remove the base because of the weight of the saw and its top heavy nature.

The saw is obviously well made because it appeared to suffer no damage. Top marks here to Axminster.

Much later, when I had cause to fit a new blade, I discovered that the lower door was obstructed by the new base and could not be opened more than was sufficient to lift the door off the hinge pins. I then cut away a section of the door, sufficient to clear the frame to facilitate future access.

Despite my problems, I think the product is well made and would presumably work on machinery that is more stable than a band saw.
However, I suspect that even on a very smooth floor the set up I have would still be dangerous. For example: if when moving the machinery you happened to foul a wheel against a trailing cable or a very small piece of waste wood I am sure you would suffer the same fate as me. I hesitate to think what might happen if trying the same thing on the wooden floor of a man-shed!

Good peice of kit well made

Bought this for my Wadkin ags10 table saw as only have a small workshop, but with this wheeled base it makes moving a very heavy machine very easy. It has 4 lockable wheels but find it quite adequate to only lock the 2 front ones , The increase in working height isn,t noticeable during use. Best thing since sliced bread! been using it for a couple of months now and havn,t come across any problems.
Highly recommended

Excellent product.

Robust and smooth rolling, with very easy assembly. I did have to reduce the length of the side pieces and remove a small amount of material from two corner arms to achieve the minimum size, but that was soon done. The simple assembly used meant no lifting of the 165kg machine was necessary - simply assemble 2 wheels, one end and 2 side pieces, rock the machine and slide that assembly into place: rock the machine the other way and slide the other 2 wheels and end piece into place.

This does cost nearly twice as much as Axminster Universal Mobile Base (100253) but you do get what you pay for. It is very solid, very easy to assemble and adjust, and provides a good solid platform for my planer/thicknesser.
