The Jet JWL1221VS is different to every other lathe in the Jet range. The whole lathe has been designed to make the woodturning experience better by focusing on control. As with all other JET lathes, this one is made from cast iron, but the bed width is much wider than is usually found on machines of this size. This gives great support to the tool rest holder, which also stays exactly where you clamp it even under the heaviest loads. The spindle is supported by heavy duty bearings and is quietly driven by a 745W DC motor via a 6 groove belt system. All of the motor controls are very conveniently located together; the speed control, spindle speed digital readout and forward/reverse selector all come naturally to hand. The tall, rigid tailstock has an ACME barrel lead screw with 64mm of travel, the barrel and headstock spindles have 2MT tapers. Camlocks on both tailstock and toolrest holder allow easy positioning just where you want them. To help keep things tidy there are tool and cable storage fittings on the bed, keeping those essential tools within easy reach. Although this is a great bench top lathe, with the optional extension bed and matching lathe and bed stands you can expand this lathe into a floor standing machine with over 1,000mm between centres. The lathe stand has a built-in storage tray plus wide feet for stability, whilst the bed extension is an exact match to the lathe bed, giving a completely integrated look to whole machine. This is without doubt a very fine small lathe.
N.B. The distance between centres will vary and be dependent on the type of centres or accessories used.

Excellent Service from AxminsterAfter around 22 months of fairly heavy usage of my 1221VS making circular picture frames and decorative boxes, salt and pepper mills and bowls, the lathe controller died with a fatal error code. A call to Axmiinster and to my surprise, they told me JET lathes carry 2 years warranty. They supplied a free replacement controller card by return post. Lathe back in service after I fitted the new card with the defective card sent back for investigation.

Amazing QualityI recently bought this lathe as a novice woodturner, i used to turn many years ago but didnt have the space or equipment to continue. I couldnt be hppier with this product. it has excellent build quality and reassuringy heavy. it is large than i initially expected, buut this is no real problem. for a novie or experienced turner alike, this is the machine for you. the variable speed and quick belt change is very useful.i decided to spenda bit extra so i could tun slightly larger products and i ameager to get the bed extension and maybe the stands at some point too. Thankyou Jet, and Thank you Axminster, you have made this guy very happy yet again. keep up the good work!

Excellent small latheBought this lathe as an upgrade from AWVSL. Variable speed is very precise although it is possible to disturb the speed setting by catching the speed control knob on clothing when leaning over the lathe to hollow bowls etc. The lathe can be reversed which is very useful when sanding and polishing. This lathe is just about on the limit for one man lift and assembly onto its stand. I have used it for about a year for bowl turning, pen making and even some limited metal turning to reduce the shank diameter of router bits. It is possible to stall the lathe if you get a very bad catch but the electronic control prevents any damage occurring and power cycling recovers the situation nicely.

ImpressiveI already have a large lathe for bowl work and wanted something a little more dedicated for the smaller work; mandrel jobs, delicate finial work etc. The build quality of this is impressive, the machine is solid and smooth running which is essential in a lathe. As i am used to a big lathe the rests seem small (although robust for their size), but after use seem appropriate for the machine. I will definately be looking at other Jet products if i replace any other items in the work shop.
