In Detail

Available as a set of six chisels in a wooden presentation case. The Kirschen 1101 chisels are a fine example of a time when chisel makers took care to ensure that the handle was matched to the blade width. In this case the six chisels are fitted with gradually larger white beech handles. From the 6mm to the 26mm blade, each well-shaped handle is fitted with a steel ferrule. The blades are fully polished front and back and produced from Kirschen's own high carbon steel. The set comprises 6, 10, 12, 16, 20 and 26mm widths in a wooden case.

Very good chisels

Had a set for 3 years and used daily on site for fitting doors. They keep a very good edge and will sharpen quickly. Wouldn't used anything less now. Plus they don't seem to rust like others I've used.

Cut above the rest

I've had this set of fine chisel for some time and think there are very good value for the money , they sharpen and polish very well on water stones , and they are also very well balanced . I've tried the more outrageous expensive makes and the only difference is that when you use them, the handles don't come off.

Sharp out of the box

Took two of them out for a test run last night. Was only planning a rough approximation of some 45 degree long and deep (4" by 3") finger joints I needed to chop out so didn't bother flattening or honing. Have to say I was very very surprised at the results. Effortlessly chopped through the test pieces and very clean edges, also really nice control for paring producing shavings the length of the test piece. Used the 12mm and 20mm so far, same results with each so really looking forward to trying out the others.

The test pieces are deal, will add to the review once I've tried them on the mahogany stock.

Must Have Others

I've had a full set for more than 6 years. For the price, they are good value. However, ignoring price, they are probably just average. A good set of Japanese chisels or Lie-Nielsen socket chisels are simply much better if you can afford them. Since they are relatively inexpensive, I sawed off 2 inches of the handles on two of them to use for dovetailing, which makes them more manoeuvrable as they are a bit clumsy for fine paring or chopping.

Used daily for 5+ years

As a professional cabinet maker, I use these every day. I can quite honestly say they are the best chisels I've ever used. Hold an edge very well (sharpened on a Tormek - also recommended) and have a great balance. Only negatives are though they have a metal ring, best to still keep to the wooden mallet. and the edges are quite thick so are not very good for cleaning out dovetails face on unlike a good set of Japanese chisels. Would recommend these as your every day set with a few supplimentary chisels (Mortice, Japanese, carving and smaller sized chisel - such as a 2mm).
