In Detail

A slightly different take on the cranked paring chisel. Kirschen have used one of their famous bevel edge chisels and forged the blade into a gentle double curve which raises the handle by about 40mm above the work. Hornbeam handles, 275mm overall length, fully polished blade. Made in Germany.

very poor quality

I do expect to spend some time flattening the back of a new chisel, but to spend 2 hours on a course diamond stone flatting the back is ridiculous. The back is so concave that if it was any worse it could be considered a gouge except of course it would be curved the other way. The bevel is also out with one edge deeper than the other. I expect to spend another 2 hours finishing the back and correcting the bevel. Once I have put the chisel in a usable condition I am sure it will be a very useful tool. I resent having to do the work which the manufactures are paid to do.

Kirschen paring chisel

I bought the largest 20mm size, although a larger option would have been preferable. The chisel comes beautifully polished, though the continental style handle will not be to everybody's taste. Paring chisels are for delicate work, so a top ferrule & hammer button are an unnecessary addition, making the handle less comfortable. The blade came with a slight back bevel, so needed lapping flat. Brilliant for stop chamfers, cleaning glue out of corners and much else besides. Should have bought one years ago!
