In Detail

Socket chisels are not as common as they used to be, mainly because they are more expensive to make than the common tanged chisel of today. On the plus side they are far stronger, and the handles less likely to break than those fitted to tanged chisels, and the handles can easily be replaced. At 230mm long, these chisels from Lie-Nielsen are particularly comfortable in the hand and have excellent balance. The blades are made of A-2 Tool Steel, hardened to Rockwell 60-62, cryogenically treated and double tempered. The edges are square, parallel along the length, and very narrow so you can get into tight places. The backs are ground flat and finished by hand. The bevel is flat ground at 30°, little additional honing is required. Lie-Nielsen Chisels have Maine-harvested Hornbeam handles, not surprisingly known locally as Ironwood, and prized for its toughness. This under-utilized species makes superb chisel handles.

The best

By far the best chisel you will ever buy. So balanced and well made you can feel the quality with your eyes closed. When they need a touch up use a wet stone for a couple of minutes at 30 degrees angle.

hands down the best chisel i have ever used! i brought the 1"/25.4m one, ive had it for roughly 6 months now and i have only sharpened it twice and this is with regular use. it holds and edge like no other chisel i have. ive brought and used the famous Stanley everlasting chisels and even the special alloy Japanese chisels and these are good but the Lie Nielsen chisels are just in a league of their own. Dont think about buying these just do it! wish i had brought these a long time ago.

Six of the best.

These chisels are light in the hand, possibly due to their construction. This in no way detracts from the fact they are a quality tool. I purchased six as soon as they became available in this country. They hold an edge just as well as a Sorby, but I find the handles constantly loosen, which is no more than an irritation. I have used a large number of different makes in my time. These are without doubt up amongst the best. The backs polished up without to much effort and as mentioned the edge holds sharp as good as any. They are a credit to lie Nielson and a pleasure to own and use.

Great... butt,

Having tried a number of different chisel brands from cheap, through mid range to premium and japanese type. For me these have a nice balance for a full length chisels and I love the socketed handle design. I can store the chisels, blade away, in random order and can identify each chisel at a glance just by looking at the type of wood of have used for replacements for the hornbeam ones supplied. I have a few of these chisels now and my only grip is I wish Lie Nielsen did them in a shorter American pattern/Buttt length. I cold cut an inch and a half off the ends but with just the thoughts of doing so I sense my grandfather turning in his tomb
