In Detail

The Lie-Nielsen version of the side clamping style of honing guide has a solidly machined stainless steel body with a bronze bearing. As you would expect this is a greatly improved version of a well tried and tested sharpening jig. It features removable jaws; replacement jaws are available for 5mm chisels or less, tall jaws for mortice chisels, long jaws for very short blades and angled jaws for Lie-Nielsen’s skew blades. The honing guide comes with the standard pair of jaws that fit most plane blades. The distance the blade projects from the front edge of the honing guide determines the honing angle. It is possible to achieve bevel angles between 20° and 50°.

Very good, but not good for Japanese chisels.

This is probably the best honing guide for plane blades I've ever used. It's excellent !
But for Japanese chisels it will not work... I bought it for sharpening the many Japanese chisels I use daily. It's a real shame.. I've wasted quite a bit of money thinking that the extra jaws that you can purchase will work with them, but nope !
While it's an extremely well made tool and is high quality I'd say that my previous honing guide works with all my tools and this one dosent.
I'm learnt that this tool works with normal bevel chisels and most plane blades very well, but is made specifically to work with lie Nielsen tools.
I love the lie Nielsen planes have 3 block incl violin plane - all are top quality.
Where as this is a quality tool and works extremely well It's very expensive and a bit gimmicky, to get the best out of it to have to buy all the different attachments, plus 45 quid for a screw driver is laughable... I didn't purchase it.
I would recommend doing a bit of research before buying it to find out if your tools will fit first...

Lie Nielsen Honing guide - good but not perfect

I really like the slide clamping action of this type of guide. It holds wide plane blades consistently square (compared with the Veritas guide - which I find can let the blade move). It's very simple and quick to set up and also easy to achieve a slight camber on blades where needed.
I have a couple of issues with the quality . There are some rough edges which need filing down and the stainless steel finish is poor in places. None of this affect its use, but Lie Nielsen tools are normally a cut above the rest - as indeed they should be at this price! I will need an additional set of jaws as the standard set supplied won't accommodate the blade for my block plane.

Lie nielsen honing guide

I bought this primarily for sharpening my 18 degree skew blades left & right. I have to say that after making the jig to go with it, it has to be one of the best sharpening systems I have used. It's quick easy & holds the blade securely at what ever angle you wish to hone. Honing is always something we don't look forward to, not any more. Brilliant Lie-Nielsen a simple device made easy.
