The beauty of hand tools

I have just bought this plane from Axminster. Ordered on line, with international delivery.
Another beautiful tool from Lie Nielsen. It certainly was ready to work, straight from the box.
That said, I think it will benefit from a little more final honing. Perhaps a secondary bevel.
But, that's certainly no criticism. Someone not prepared to fettle their hand tools shouldn't
be allowed near these quality tools. These tools deserve to go to good & caring homes.
So there !!

Incredible little plane!

I bought the Lie-Nielson 102 block plane from Axminster a couple of years ago but it's only recently that I've used it sufficiently to realise just what an amazing little plane it is. When you come to look at it you have to wonder what it is that makes it so good. Is it the steel they use for the blade? Is it the relative weight of the brass body? Is it the very fine micrometer adjustment? Is it the sheer simplicity of the design? Well, I just don't know why it's so good but it is, with the added bonus that my grandson will probably be able to use it one day. This is an incredible little plane!

Lets hope it ends better this time

So, I bought another one. The quality is still there 20 years on, every bit as good as the last-a joy to own, hold and use. Straight out of the box this took shavings from a bit of pine sitting on the bench that you can practically see through. 0.05mm thick. I just hope this one won't walk.

Disappointing in the end!

I bought the 102 quite a few years ago, it was recommended to me by dear old John Brown, the chair maker. Block planes had always seemed to be rather crude and silly-certainly the cheap ones we had in the school wood room (the 80's) were fit for nothing, but John insisted that this Lie Nielsen low angle block plane would change my views.
Well, I bought it and I tried it, and I found it to be not only nigh on perfect, but absolutely indispensable and a joy to hold, own and use. It lived in my travelling toolbox, where every tool must be literally worth its weight, and was used every day. It worked well, held an edge, cut so sweetly....
Why the disappointment? Well, my toolbox got stolen. And of all the tools that were in it, this is the only one I miss.

Indispensible tool

This small low-angle block plane is indispensable for trimming and finishing work. Despite being made of bronze I find it is the perfect weight for holding in one hand whilst being large enough for two-handed use. The mouth is nice and tight so this is a plane for taking fine, finishing shavings.
