This low angle version of a No. 4 plane complements the low angle Jack plane. Bedded at 12° the 50mm (2") wide by 4.8mm (3/16") thick A2 cryogenically treated blade takes and holds a superb edge. The body is a fine ductile iron casting, handles of selected cherry and bronze lever cap. The mouth can be finely adjusted. 240mm (9.1/2") long, weight 1.7kg (3.3/4lbs).

A delight to useI purchased this over the LV Small Bevel up smoother, which is some £80 cheaper than the LN 164. I am quite a fan of the bevel up hand planes and have the 62 and 7 1/2 also. The 164 felt more comfortable in the hand than the LV equivalent and the LN can be easily adjusted on the fly, having the Bailey type adjuster on top of the cap iron, so despite the extra cost, the LN won the contest. The LN also felt slightly better quality, but at this level, that could be rather subjective statement.

Superb craftmanship - beautiful planeI had previously purchased a Lie-Nielsen small block plane at a woodworking show many years ago and though I didn't need a new smoothing plane I really did want to try out this low angled smoothing plane. I was not disappointed from the moment I first took hold of it - it felt right. Comfortable and well balanced.

Best plane I haveI bought this plane about eight years ago. It is by far my most used bench plane. The design is different from most planes and the results are far superior to any similar sized plane I have. This together with the high angle 4.5 plane from Lie Nielson will probably do most woodworkers for life. I find it excellent for shooting edges as well as general smoothing use. It is relatively light but with heavyweight oomph so not burden in use. An excellent plane which will work out cheap in the long run.

Excellent Service from Axminster and Lie-NielsenI bought one of these 164 smoothing planes and am very happy with it. I use it mainly with shooting boards. A year after purchase I noticed a small crack in the wooden handle. I reported this to Axminster and they forwarded the message to Lie-Nielsen. Within 24 hours a new part was in the post from USA. No quibbles, no questions. Excellent.
