Makita BO5041The sander works well as expected . However, after only two days work and approximately 15 sanding discs, the hook and loop system on the sander has failed so the discs do not stick to the sander. This is very disappointing as the cost of the replacement backing disc is £25. This makes simple sanding jobs very expensive. I would have expected better from Makita.

Recommended random orbital sanderI needed a new sander to replace a 35 year old Bosch machine that is now a bit temperamental. A ROS best meets my needs and I bought one of these based on my favourable experience of other Makita power tools and on the previous reviews on this site. I was not disappointed. It's first job was to sand varnish off an iron-hard oak beam, which it did effortlessly. I used Mirka 120 & 240 discs, which removed the varnish and old stain down to clean wood leaving a silky smooth finish. No need for hand sanding before waxing as in the past. Light pressure gives best results, let the machine do the work. Setting 5 removes a fair bit of material, setting 3 is best for finishing, setting 1 for a gentler touch on rounded surfaces. The dust bag catches about 90% of dust, vac extraction is essential if you want a dust free finish. The port for the dust bag / extraction is 22.5 mm o/d. The cable on mine is 2m long, which I find adequate for bench work, depending on where your electricity socket is. If you need longer, which you will for site work, use an extension cable!

Random Orbit SanderBrought this sander as a standby, really impressed with everything apart from the lenght of the power cord, which even when at a bench it struggles to get to the end of my piece of wood before it runs out and i have to turn the board. would i buy another? most likley as it is a good machine.

Makita Quality = Top Reliability & PerformanceThis the second Makita machine I get [also have a 115mm angle grinder]. I really like Makita, their machines are sturdy, built to last and perform very well. This orbital sander is no exception. It is a pleasure to work with, vibration is minimal, even at high speeds. It is not too heavy so you can handle the job well and easy. It can sand anything. I have sanded high spec reproduction Georgian and Regency furniture right from bringing out the grain to perfect - and I mean PERFECT - smooth finish, ready for staining and finishing. Fit it with a pad and bonnet and it will also polish the final wax if this is the preferred finish on top of your lacquer, French polish or even Polyvinyl water-based varnish. Fit it with really rough and tough sandpaper and you can use it just as easily to grind down woodchip paper, ready to get soaked. Perfect to peel off the walls, easy task. This machine is versatile, does the job truly well. For the price, I can't see how anyone could go wrong. Buy one!

The best sander I've ownedAlthough I've had several hand sanders over the years, this is my first random orbit sander. The improvement in both speed and finish over other sanders has really surprised me. I've found that very low pressure (just enough to guide the sander around) works best. It's never once gauged or scored a workpiece, but still manages to remove material quickly when needed. I mostly use it with dust extraction, which is easy because of the long, round extraction pipe. Even the little bag, on the rare occasions I've used it, does a surprisingly good job of catching dust. The ergonomics are great, and I love the adjustable side handle. I agree that the cable could be longer, but it's such a joy to use that it seems churlish to mark it down for that. All in all, I'd recommend this little device to anyone.
