Excellent and well made tool

I decided to take the plunge and try a large BU plane after years of using Stanley bench planes. The physics of the cutting action is entirely different with no cap iron - hard to put into words but noticeably finer shavings can be produced which may be important if you are mainly smoothing rather than having to take a lot off. I tried it on some dense beech with excellent results. The irons are a little annoying because they're tapered and there's only just enough to fit into a side clamping honing guide. Nevertheless an excellent edge can be achieved. I guess Veritas want you to buy their top clamping honing system! These BU irons blunt quicker due to the bottom wear bevel, but IMHO smooth better than the traditional old smoothers. Well worth investing in and persevering with.

A Must-Have

If you have to have just one general-purpose handplane in your workshop, then make it this one. I would have said the low-angle smoother version, but this plane is so great for shooting end-grain that it really has no equal. Beautifully-engineered, good-looking, and so, so, efficient. For a big, heavy plane, it's surprisingly easy to use - even one-handed if you're feeling flash! Effortless action takes the sweating and swearing out of planing, and you'll wonder how you ever managed without one!

I kept looking enviously at this plane at woodworking shows, trying to work out how to tell 'er indoors that her little man had just spent over 200 quid on a plane, but in the end I cracked and bought it anyway. She took it surprising well, my injuries were superficial, and the plane is a joy. I rarely use any other plane these days, with the exception of my trusty low-angle block plane, and the indispensable Record 311 rebate plane. Veritas are to be congratulated on their products and build- quality.

Great all rounder bench plane

This is a wonderfully designed tool, manufactured to a very high standard. The plane comes ready to use from the box; it just benefits from a quick hone of the blade and I waxed the tool body to resist corrosion. I use this plane all the time for roughing work and flattening material. It has left such a great finish in both Sapele and Oak that I often don't need to use a smoothing plane at all. The PMV-11 blade is excellent, keeping a good edge. I also purchased a separate toothed blade in A2 steel which makes short work of really rough timber and the higher angle blade, although I've not had much use for that yet. The blades for this jack plane are interchangeable with the Veritas low-angle jointer which is also useful.

Great plane

This is such a versatile plane. It's not only end grain that it handles well it's everything, you are only limited by the honing angle of the blade. I have lie nielsen planes and for classic plane designs I would still recommend them over veritas, just personal preference, but veritas beats lie nielsen for innovation and this is a very innovative tool. The features like the stop for the mouth so it doesn't hit the blade, the side screws to keep the blade central in the plane mouth and the better mouth adjustment so you only use the knob. The sides are wider and better designed than the lie nielsen for using a shooting board. For me I prefer the extra weight and length compared to the lie nielsen, it helps when planing difficult wood. The benefit of a low angle plane is also that that blade is positioned directly on the body, no frog, this means the blade is supported much better than bevel down and reduces chatter and it just plows through difficult timber. Be careful if you are considering the jointer version of this plane ,for me it lacked the weight needed for a jointer and you can't use it on a shooting board. The only downside is Axminsters prices on all premium planes at the moment.

Very impressive

At the offer price this is an extremely good plane at a relatively low price. The lateral adjustment is very useful and the plane itself is well made and a joy to use. Great for end grain work.

Thank good I......

I am a (mature) college student and I had been umming and ahhing over low angle planes, which one to buy how much could I afford then Axminster made my decision for me, via the daily email offers this was reduced. It is a work of art and is a joy to use out of the box, I've had the chance to compare it to the Lei Nielsen low angle and the LN No5 and this plane is superior in the adjustments in offers and size (1/4 inch wide and 1 inch longer) which in turns gives it a bit more heft which I truly love. I am not rich but it is worth it and I shall pass this on to my children, thank you Axminster. (P.S. this plane is almost spot on the same size and width as a NO51/2 when sat beside each other.)

AWESOME

So beautifully engineered, it is one of those tools that quickly becomes a part of you. I particularly like the range of blades that are available, so you can have different pitches for different woods. The blades are about 5mm. thick, so there is not much chance of any chatter. It works well with the side guard to maintain right angles.
The mouth adjustment takes less time than to say it.
I do not often say this, but I cannot fault it!!..great investment and another review from a Luthier...this time a violinmaker. I can really recommend this and other Veritas Planes.
