Good alternative for classic holdfasts

I have 19 mm (3/4") holes in 33 mm (about 1 1/4") thick bench and they work for me.
However the quality might have been better. The screws itself operate smoothly with no problem, but welding is ugly, pressure pad has sharp edges (upper side), handles have weld lines from molding and pipe end are closed with some foam. The latter lead to rust developed inside the pipe of one of the clamps. Not the best idea to lock down some moisture inside the pipe and let rust develop as for me.

I like them!

I note the reviews vary considerably in ratings. The main issue appears to be the shaft of the holdfast not gripping the bench. I also note the comment by Steve C suggesting a change to the finish to give more grip. On browsing in the store a pair of the holdfasts with a theaded finish. So maybe someone listened! So I purchased them. They work well in my bench (19mm holes in 35mm thick top). They grip tight and don't work lose. My only slight concern is that the finish on the shaft may be abrasive to the edges of the holes into what they fit but so far seems okay.

Not for every application

I made a 4 inch deep bench top made from Beech and drilled many bench dog holes to suit these hold fasts. I bought them on recommendation from axminsters staff, whilst visting thier shop. I have been trying to use them for some time and can now confirm that they do not hold their clamping ability every time. You can tighten them with as much force as you can but as soon as there is vibration from working the wood, they come loose. In my opinion it's due to their surface being highly polished chrome - it offers little interference resistance. CHANGE the finish and they would be excellent.

Fussy

Wouldnt work in my 20mm thick worktop. If I packed it out to about 55mm then it sort of worked. I think it really needs some type of collar a la the old Record Holdfasts. I sent them back. Lifes too short to faff around with this

Not for thick workbenches

The clamp holds well on 3-5 cm thick wood ( 19mm hole) But in my 85 mm maple workbench they do not hold.
The angle is too steep for these clamps and thus the friction is too low for this thick bench. I had bought them for that purpose, so i will try to add additional groves in the pin to get more friction, or use them elsewhere/ give them away. Suggest thatyou add the max usable thickness in the specs.
