Embark on our action packed five day course and learn how to make a Windsor chair. Using relevant introductory skills, you will have the opportunity to make your own chair to take home. You will use seasoned wood to make your chair which reduces the wood drying problems of wood warping once it is taken home to a heated environment.
During the five days, you will cover a whole range of woodworking skills. You will look at wood selection, shaping and turning of the legs, cutting and shaping of the seat, setting up and steam bending the bows. From there you will assemble all the components together to construct and complete your Windsor chair.
As well as covering a range of skills, you will practice the use of a wide range of modern and traditional tool and techniques. These include traditional tool shaping adzes and spokeshaves through to modern power tools like the Arbortech carving range.
Items you take home can change depending on the resources and materials available on the day.
You will start your day with a welcome talk, including a hot drink, health and safety brief and a breakdown of the machines you will be using.
No experience needed.
The minimum age is 14 years old and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the course and must not be left unattended during class hours. If you would like to read our terms and conditions click here.
A most enriching experience!
I spent a fabulous week at the Axminster Tools training centre making a Windsor chair, although I am a keen woodworker, I learnt so much more on this course and was able to use tools of the highest quality and have tuition in their use. The tutors were excellent and extremely patient and helpful, not at all like being in an educational situation. I can highly recommend this course and the education centre, a most enriching experience.Roger T, Windsor Chair Course
Very pleased with the day
Attended this sharpening course with five other students! All had various tools to sharpen. Jason provided excellent tuition. Gave tuition on the various ways to sharpen tools. Lots of tips and tricks to obtain a sharp edge. Came away with my tools well sharpened. Very pleased with the day. Thanks to the Skill Centre staff for looking after us.Harold R, Tool Sharpening Training
