In Detail

This very precise drilling jig is designed specifically to guide the drilling bit to cut mortices for door locks and their faceplates. It is quick and simple to set up, self centring and locks onto the door edge securely. It really is a simple process: mark the lock length on to the door, select the width of mortice cutter that suits your lock, set the depth collar, pass the drill shaft through the jig’s guide bush, lock the jig to the door and using power from your drill, drive the carbide tipped mortice cutter into the door moving up and down; repeat process for the faceplate. This produces a very clean smooth cut and is one of the fastest most accurate ways to cut a mortice. You can also use it to cut hinges. Power drill with a 13mm chuck running at speeds 2,000 - 3,000 rpm is recommended. Supplied with 3 special carbide tipped cutters: 19, 22 and 25.4mm covering the most popular lock widths, a shaft for lock up to 100mm in depth and carry case. Other optional accessories available including offset housing kit, longer drill shafts and long drill kit to drill through the end of a door to fit electric locks accurately.

Great weapon

Just read through the above reviews. Firstly this is a great solution to the mortice lock problem BUT you have to use the correct recommended drill otherwise you will have issues. Also like all tools it takes a while to get up to speed with it's operation. I guess many buy these thinking they can fit a mortice lock "out of the box" practice a bit first. The guy suggesting the cutters aren't standard for most locks is just plain wrong. The three cutters work for any standard mortice dead and sashlocks.
I use a corded DeWalt drill but any drill must spin fast enough.(3000 rpm)

One of the best tools I've ever bought

Even if you have just one door to do this is worth the money. Personally I have used this on over a dozen doors and its done me proud on every one. In a world of cheap trash this is surprisingly very solid and well made drill jig (you wont wear this out) with specialised cutters that basically turn your drill into a router (though far safer and easier to control) meaning you can fit locks with absolute factory perfection without even removing the door from the frame. I recently discovered that Souber make a vast range of cutter sizes to suit all manner of locks though the 3 cutters that come with it cover 95% of all doors. Doesnt work too well with a battery drill - though you can get by with an 18v drill if you're stuck. I bought a £50 Bosch 240v drill just for use with this jig and its more than adequate. Feels a little clumsy the first time you use it but you soon get the knack. Gives a beautiful, clean, perfectly square finish that literally only requires you to square off the face plate recess with a chisel. Fits the lock body and face plate. If you have ever chiseled and drilled out a full mortice lock by hand, labouring to get it all flush, square and neat then you'll know how much of a time saver this is when you can do it in under 5mins and get a perfect finish. I my opinion this is one of the best jigs ever devised.

Tool Brilliant, kit Lacking

If you buy this kit to do your internal door locks you must buy "Extra" 25.4 plunge cutter or you will be going back to get it later.
