Turning Tuesdays

Turning Tuesdays

This is your chance to see and talk about everything and anything woodturning, on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month between 10am and 4pm.

A member of the team will be available to talk turning, demonstrate and help with any queries or questions as well as giving you the chance to get hands on and have a go.

Carving Club

Carving Club

Whether you're a novice or experienced carver or simply interested in starting a new hobby, why not come along to our Carving Club? These free informal sessions provide an opportunity to try new tools and learn new techniques with helpful advice and guidance from other members and from the store team.

We meet every second Thursday between 1pm and 4pm and all materials and tools are provided. Plus there's free tea and coffee! We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Woodturning and Finishes Demonstration

Join us as tutor and demonstrator, Martin Saban-Smith RPT returns to our stores to share more of his unique woodturning creativity. Martin's enthusiasm, technical ability and artistic finishing has attracted an impressive following on social media and he promises an entertaining and informative demonstration. His relaxed presentation style has been enjoyed by hundreds of turners in the UK, Ireland, Scotland and the USA. Martin is the manufacturer and owner of the Hampshire Sheen range of finishing waxes and oils and the Intrinsic Collection dyes which will be used during his demonstration.

A detailed look at the features and benefits of a wide range of high-end, precision hand tools including leading international brands Veritas and Lie-Nielsen. During this demonstration, we'll look at comparable planes, chisels and saws from these brands and explain some of their similarities - and some of their differences. We'll also share some practical advice on set-up to ensure you get the best performance from these trusted hand tools. There'll be plenty of time to get 'hands on' yourself, so come along for what promises to be a rewarding few hours with our skilled store demonstrators.

High Wycombe Store - Chestnut Finishes With Terry Smart

We're pleased to be joined by Chestnut Finishes creator, Terry Smart. Established in 1991, Chestnut Products have become a major supplier of wood finishing materials to both hobby and professional woodworkers. Over 90% of their products are made in the UK with most products still being mixed and finished by hand, not by machine! 

In this rare opportunity, Terry will be in-store talking us through a number of the products, giving you the chance to try them for yourself, as well as showcasing how to achieve that high end finish every time.

Turn your hand to new skills this year - Every 2nd & 4th Tuesday of the month experienced woodturners meet in-store to offer free guided sessions. Any level of experience will be welcomed by the group's friendly members.

This week - one of the group's main demonstrators, Les Alexander, will be going over the process involved in making a turned cake stand.

Free Woodworking Session

The scrollsaw is one of the most regularly used machines in a workshop, mainly due to its versatility. This session will show you how, together with a Pillar Drill and our clock sets, you can use the AT406 or AT535 to make a professional looking wooden clock.

There are two sessions, morning and afternoon, both are limited to just 2 participants*. This hands-on session will be carefully supervised by in-store enthusiast Stacey Davies making it ideal for beginners - and what you make is yours to take home!

Create cost savings and not wood shavings with the Woodcut bowl saver.

This week, Malcolm Cleaver, as part of our Turning Tuesday session, will take a closer look and the Bowlsaver by Woodcut. These tools can enable you to increase your output from a bowl blank by up to three times. Come along and see the tool in action, learn how to cut different types of wood, adjust the depth of the blade, what tool post your lathe requires and much more.

This is a free club, so pop in anytime from 10-2 pm

High Wycombe - An Evening With Vic Tesolin and Veritas

Free Woodworking Demonstration and Talk

Internationally renowned Canadian woodworker, tutor and author, Vic Tesolin, is our VIP guest at this evening demonstration in store.

A regular visitor to the UK as an ambassador for premium hand tools manufacturer, Veritas, Vic is widely admired for his expertise and creativity with hand tools and his engaging and entertaining presentation style. Devoted to the 'minimalist' approach to woodworking, you can expect to see Vic explain the set-up and practical use of a range of Veritas hand planes, sharpening systems, chisels and saws. His informal approach means there is always time for questions on any woodworking related topic and he is always delighted to share his workshop experiences with fellow enthusiasts. Come along for what promises to be an informative and enjoyable 'evening with Vic Tesolin'.

High Wycombe Store - Woodturning Jaws Explained

Join us in store as we explore one of the key woodturning accessories that sometimes get overlooked - the jaws. Axminster Tools & Machinery manufacture a range of high precision jaws compatible with our 'Evolution' series chucks - all designed and machined at our manufacturing facilities in Devon. These proudly UK made jaws present the aspiring woodturner with the means to hold and turn wood for the best possible creative results.  In this demonstration we'll discuss and demonstrate a variety of popular jaws including Pen, Button, Dovetail, and Expanding Pin Chuck jaws and show the typical project applications of each. Whether you're interested in turning wide diameter pieces such as bowls and platters or finer pieces such as goblets and pens, we'll have just the jaw to suit your needs!
