Sittingbourne Store - Woodturning Jaws Explained

Join us in-store as we explore one of the key woodturning accessories that sometimes get overlooked - the jaws. Axminster Tools & Machinery manufacture a range of high precision jaws compatible with our 'Evolution' series chucks - all designed and machined at our manufacturing facilities in Devon. These proudly UK made jaws present the aspiring woodturner with the means to hold and turn wood for the best possible creative results.  In this demonstration, we'll discuss and demonstrate a variety of popular jaws including Pen, Button, Dovetail, and Expanding Pin Chuck jaws and show the typical project applications of each. Whether you're interested in turning wide diameter pieces such as bowls and platters or finer pieces such as goblets and pens, we'll have just the jaw to suit your needs!

N.B. this demo will be split into two sessions - to get the best value please join us at either 10am or 12 noon.

Free Woodturning Demonstration

We're excited to welcome internationally renowned designer and maker Carlyn Lindsay RPT to the store for her first demonstration with Axminster Tools and Machinery. 

Carlyn is well known on the professional woodturning circuit for her striking laminated hand-turned work. Using coloured veneers and planked hardwoods she creates contemporary works of functional art that are stylish yet playful with their use of patterns and colour. 

Carlyn's passion and enthusiastic approach to her work spills out of her demonstrations making it impossible to leave without feeling inspired to create your own piece of art.

Sittingbourne Store - UJK Worktop Jig Training

Do you want to achieve the perfect joints for your kitchen worktops? 

In-store expert and Skill Centre tutor Peter Hibbin will be showing a class how with a step-by-step guide to using the UJK Worktop Jig.   

This jig is capable of 45° and 90° left or right-hand joints in worktops. It enables you to make peninsular joints, corner radii of 40mm, 100mm, 90° square end cuts plus 45° and 22.5° angle cuts. In addition, there are facilities for cutting 35mm cabinet door hinge recesses (18mm carcass), a hole for tap fixings 35mm (3/4" BSP) and three slots for 65mm and 150mm joining bolts.

Spaces on these FREE training sessions are limited to only 5 participants, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Working with wood and resin is right on trend and in this national demonstration, our store specialists will provide an introduction to resin, using our new range of EcoPoxy products. Together these offer an ideal solution for woodworkers, artists and craftspeople looking to explore new creative possibilities in their work.

During this demonstration we'll make a small project, providing technical guidance and useful tips which will help you achieve professional results in your workshop from the outset. We'll provide details of the tools and accessories you might need and highlight some of the pitfalls when starting out working with resin. We'll also share some of the reasons why we stock EcoPoxy products, which are proven to provide outstanding all-round performance, clarity and durability while remaining environmentally friendly. Sittingbourne Store - Woodturning With Martin Saban-Smith

Woodturning and Finishes Demonstration

Join us as tutor and demonstrator, Martin Saban-Smith RPT returns to our stores to share more of his unique woodturning creativity. Martin's enthusiasm, technical ability and artistic finishing has attracted an impressive following on social media and he promises an entertaining and informative demonstration. His relaxed presentation style has been enjoyed by hundreds of turners in the UK, Ireland, Scotland and the USA. Martin is the manufacturer and owner of the Hampshire Sheen range of finishing waxes and oils and the Intrinsic Collection dyes which will be used during his demonstration.

I have always been interested in woodwork from a very young age and was always fascinated in using tools to make projects around the home. In 14 years I have trained several young people in the use of machines and hand tools in order to make furniture from native hardwoods.

The business then changed for the next 6 years by venturing into antique restoration. I started working for Axminster in 2006 and has been involved with selling and demonstrating machines and hand tools in many of the shops around the country.
