In Detail

The complex geometry of a drill bit point makes it very hard to free hand sharpen it correctly. The Drill Bit Sharpening Attachment DBS-22 makes it possible to sharpen drill bits on your Tormek Water Cooled Sharpening System with the highest precision. You create a 4-facet point which gives the ideal cutting performance. The optimal point and clearance angle can be set according to each drilling requirement in regards to drill size and material. You can restore completely worn drills as well as broken drills to a perfect shape.

Unlike conventional drill bit sharpeners, Tormek sharpens with water cooling which is gentle on the steel. Overheating of the steel is usually not noticeable, but the consequences are that the drill will dull rapidly and may even break. By working with the laws of physics and cooling the edge continuously, the risk that the steel becomes overheated and loses its hardness or gets micro cracks is eliminated.

With a 4-facet sharpening the chisel edge gets a point instead of being almost flat as on many drills. A 4-facet point will not walk and the thrust force required is considerably reduced compared to a conventional cone point drill. It generates less heat and the life of the drill is therefore also prolonged. The attachment can be set at any point angle between 90° and 150° and at four different clearance angles. This flexibility enables you to give the drill the geometry that works best for each drilling operation. You can for example minimize the burr, which occurs on the exit side of a drilled hole by increasing the point angle and decreasing the clearance angle.

The drill holder as well as the guides are made with the highest precision to ensure that the lengths of the two cutting edges will be equal within close tolerances. This is an essential requirement so that the cutting edges will work equally and bore a round, straight hole, which is not larger than the drill diameter. Copes with drills from 3 mm (1/8") to 22 mm (7/8"). Fits all Tormek models.

Tormek drill sharpening jig

As a toolmaker i have spent a great deal of time perfecting the hand sharpening drill bits. Save yourself time and effort, with this jig you can sharpen a wide range of drill bits perfectly with little effort. Absolutely the best drill sharpening jig currently available.

the best for drill bit

I've tried all but the best way to sharpen the tips is this. I use it since it was put on sale, so for years. Taking advantage of a good lens are obtained after much practice excellent results. Tormek has developed the best system, not too expensive to sharpen. They have not paid me for this review!

Expensive well made quality product - Does the job perfectly

Recently I had to drill several holes in steel bar and soon blunted several 8mm drills I sharpened them on my grinder rendering them useless. My uncle a master tool maker seems able to sharpen drill bits by hand on a grinder but I simply cannot, and my many attempts have been futile.
I own a Tormek which I use successfully for planer knives, chisels etc and was shocked by the price of the drill attachment. I asked my specialist tool shop who said that various pros had bought the attachment and are all very happy with it. The shop said that it is the ONLY drill sharpener that actually works...the others are toys I was told. I watched the video and became more I bought the attachment!

I have not been disappointed I have taken the blunt 8mm drills and returned them to as new condition ...actually better because I now have a double edge. I have spent about 10minutes for each drill bit as they were so bad, other drills have been made as new in about 5 minutes for each. I highly recommend the attachment as I honestly do not see a viable alternative to getting a perfect, and accurate edge on a drill bit.

As other reviewers have stated the jig is very well made and thought out. I suspect I shall still be needing to look at the instructions next time I use the jig as there is a lot of detail to absorb to set the jig accurately...but it is otherwise straight forward.

The various parts of the jig are very well made and obviously has something to do with the high price tag...making something like this is certainly not cheap. Having said that buying new drills at £10 a click is not cheap either so I believe that the jig is a worthwhile investment.

Agree completely with previous reviewer. I have had mine over a year. There are a few tricks to using consistently but once learned sharpening larger drills is enjoyable. Larger diameter ground four-facet drill more quickly and in metal cooler so last longer. One day I will make an adapter for very small drill sizes.

If you just want to touch up smaller drills you ay be better off with a different system , as this is costly. If you have a Tormek already and use big drill sizes, it's brilliant

Tormek DBS-22 Bit Sharpener

This is a beautifully made piece of engineering and gets very high precision results.I no longer own any chisel points bits as above 3mm they are now all split point ground

Initial set-up took a while and it is worthwhile watching the video on you tub with Alan Holtham. Once you get going it becomes intuitive quickly and speeds up.

I had looked at the proxon and drill doctor products but if you have a Tormek this system is the best option as you have great control and there is no heat de-tempering. The item is relatively small (about the size of a yellow pages in it's box) and therefore takes up less space than another machine.

Obviously only buy this to add to your tormek or other whetstone system. If I did not own the tormek then I would have gone with Drill doctor as that system also support split point grinding in the higher models

It is great having a collection of very sharp drills.
