In Detail

Ideal for starting screws, auger gimlets have a tapered screw tip and an auger body. The seven sizes in the set range from 2mm to 5mm (5/64" to just over 3/16"), which will handle the pre-drill for screw sizes No.2 to No.10. They are particularly useful for short screws or screws in awkward places, both of which present problems for power pre-drilling. In tempered steel, ferro-blacked in the traditional manner, this set was made specifically for Veritas by a small European maker.

Very useful tools.

One of the most useful additions to my toolbox. I always get the pilot hole in the right place, first time, never any slippage and much quicker than getting the drill out for most small jobs in wood. Particularly good for making clean, accurate pilot holes in plasterboard walls and ceilings and you can gradually step up the diameter until the rawlplug fits nice and tight. Well made, strong and reliable …. wouldn't be without them!

Super tool

These Veritas gimlets are just the job, great for pilot holes.

They might look a bit flimsy, they're not.

This is actually engineering at it's best. A simple design that uses the right material and then perform the job it is designed for, beatuifully.

I could see the gimlets displayed in the Tate!

A bargain!

I had almost given upon finding a decent gimlet at a price I was prepared to pay, having destroyed several previous ones by trying to exert too much torque.
These may not look anything special, but one-piece design and material used in these gimlets makes them seriously strong.
The smallest ones can effectively used as small drills - no more getting out the hand-drill and trying to find a suitable fine drill-bit, only to have it snap off in the hole! Same for the larger sizes: if you are inserting short stubby screws there's often no need to drill - the two big gimlets will take more torque than I can deliver by hand, or even with a large screwdriver through the handle!
