In Detail

A bar gauge has two main uses, firstly for comparing measurements such as the diagonals in a drawer and secondly for transferring measurements for fitting shelves into recesses and the like. The openings in the heads are 3/4" x 1/2" and are designed to take two pieces of timber 3/4" x 1/4" (not supplied) of any convenient length. This is one of those really simple tools which you wonder how you ever managed without.

Usual Veritas ingenuity and implementation. Treat these as precision measuring equipment and they will not disappoint. Easy to use, as both a check for square, and as a story stick!

Ignore what people are saying about flimsy plastic. These are designed for measuring not prising open packing cases!! When combined with some nice wood these make fantastic measuring guages. I bought two sets so I could make large and small versions. They work a treat. I made a simple block with two grooved rabbits to hang them on the workshop wall nice and safe. Unless you're planning on doing something with these other than measuring then I would imagine they will last you a lifetime...and probalby more.

Why not metal!

Disappointed when theses arrived, cheap plastic construction! If only they had made this tool out of metal!

Great product idea, very useful for repeat marking but its just a matter of time before they brake due to the fragile plastic construction, would pay twice the price for a metal version which would last a life time.

Essential piece of kit

I have now made three 2m,1m,.500mm.Mine are made from oak.I never measure anything if I can transfer dimensions. One of the most useful things you can buy for the money. They are quite delicate, but handled carefully they should last. I have been using mine non stop for 6 months months.Make sure you dimension the wood very carefully.A loose fit will result in poor accuracy and broken parts. They should be a snug fit.

Veritas Bar Gauge Heads

Although this does not appear as an exceptional tool to begin with, it certainly has proved to be so. I used oak for the two sticks which held the machined screws and once waxed, they slide a treat. I generally make chests of drawers mounted on a plinth and I would use a large square to check before tightening the clamps overnight, hoping all will be well. This device takes all the worry away and it is so quick and easy to use. There is no homemade substitute that I have found in all my time in woodworking. Buy a set and you will not regret it.
