The Veritas Bevel-Up Jointer Fence enables you to shoot consistent and accurate square or bevelled edges with your Veritas bevel-up jointer. The 280mm long anodised aluminium fence can be attached to either side of the plane with the brass thumbscrews provided. A set screw can be adjusted to square the fence to the sole. As supplied, the 50mm tall guiding face can be used to plane edges perfectly square to the face of your workpiece. It can also be used to shoot angles less than 90° when a bevelled wooden guide is attached to the inside face of the fence.

Veritas Jointer FenceI've had this fence couple of months now and have used it to fit drawers with the "piston fit" method. It has been invaluable, for example, when making final adjustments to the 8mm thick drawer sides (which are fitted to the opening before drawer construction). It would be impossible to plane such thin pieces square without some sort of supporting fence. I could use my planer-thicknesser, of course, but I have to set this up every time I use it in my confined working space, which is a total pain. The Veritas fence works extremely well, once you have understood how to ensure that the plane cuts dead perpendicular to the fence. Even if you have a perfectly square plane, it is unlikely (as Veritas notes in its instructions) that the fence will be perfectly square to the plane base. I find that the best method to get a square cut is to start planing and then make gradual ajustments to the angle of the plan iron using the lateral adjuster, until the plane is producing even shavings across the width of the workpiece. Once I have achieved a square edge relative to the face of the workpiece (against which the fence is supported) I can then plane to final width. A little bit of practice is require to make the fence work, but it soon becomes an indespensable tool for precision work. Another innovative and useful product from Veritas.
